The big Tranny shoot-out

Post by Wannatone »

Well, guys,

here we go!
http://www.18watt.com/modules.php?name= ... &p=OT_Test

There are clips of 10 different output trannies.
The trannies are not named but randomly numbered, since we´d like to be fair as discussed before.

Please listen to each clip and decide which ones are your favourites. There might be just subtle differences, so please listen attentively.
Everybody can give out three stars to his favourite trannies, up to two on the same iron.

We´re going to reveal the what´s what after we have collected a sufficient number of entries.

Please excuse my playing

Gabi is now going to prepare the poll stuff.

Let´s start the show! :D

I keep having trouble running the clips. It craps out during the first clip and logs me off. Then it says I have no access to a restricted area. Gabi...er...help?

Hi,

does work perfect. I can only speak for mac-users. Go to the disk symbol, push the CTRL and the mouse button. A window will appear with the option " save as ...." This will download the complete file and afterwards you can open it with iTunes.

Regards

I can't play them uninterrupted from start to finish. Winamp plays about 10-15 sec then shows a buffer being filled. I'm on a broadband connection so I don't think it's me. From what I hear from my speakers, they all sound the same.

What was changed each time for each soundclip? Just the OT?? Is it with the same amp, speakers, guitar, guitarist etc. each time?

#10 seems louder than the rest, and, therefore, better to me with these computer speakers etc.

Thanks to Adrian for doing this!

i just got home, and got to hear the trannys.. Yes number 10 does seem louder..but also sounds the best to me..

I like 10 best.. 6,4,2,7,8,3,1 the least were number 5 and 9..
really none sounded bad at all.. just a few differences in some of them.. I may have to listen more.. As with the way these things go, i've probably just voted for who knows what. LOL Some were very close in how they sounded..

Thanks guys for the first input!

Yes, everything except no. 10 is exactly the same amp, setting, speakers, player. I´ve only switched between different trannies.
The actual clips are played through the normal high input with the volume at 10.
Btw, I have some more clips of the same trannies, just in case the differences should be too hard to hear.

Please go here to vote --> http://www.18watt.com/index.php

:) All this is very subjective of course ... AND we have to consider that we're listening through (mostly) crappy computer speakers. But I guess that puts all 10 x files on the "same playing field". I tend to mostly agree with Ritchie's assessment. OT10 sounds nice and "balzy", but has great overtones. OT6 was the one I preferred next. But there isn't really one OT that sounds crappy overall. I guess this shows how an OT can turn a good amp into a great amp.

So, what's different with 10 apart from the OT? :?: If it's a different amp and/or speaker(s), surely it has to be disqualified from the competition!

Thanks Adrian also, for doing this...

Talking from an unexperimented point of view, my ears sense the same in all the clips, except of course number 10 that the only difference I perceive is the volume.

I did an experiment on my site, starting all the at half time, right where you do the power chords... 3 seconds of each, one after another with 1 second of pause. All the same to my ears...

I am sure that more experienced ears can perceive the more subtile differences...

But just as Barry said, all of them would make a great amp...

thanks,
gabi.

I agree with Phil. If 10 is that different it should be removed. Something else is peculiar. That don't sound THAT different. Maybe it is the playing/recording/something else? When I did this I used the 1608, 1650, 125E, and the Heyboer clone. I changed them out and played them with the band. I don't know...call it psycho-acoustics, but there was a much larger difference between all four of them than I can hear in the MP3's. Maybe it is as simple as being there live? The computer speakers? Nah. I have a Yamaha 3-piece subwoofer set. People record different sounds all the time. What were the settings on the amp? Was the OT being pushed?

I don't know. Maybe my head is full of cotton today.

Probably the JTM-45 OT through blues..lol But he said different amp..
Hmmmmm i just got one of these OTs to try..

I guess we'll have to wait and see.. I listened again.. Still top 3 was
10,6,4 to me anyway.. See the hard part is.. if you have some OTS that sound the close to the same.. And to explain.. if one has better bass..and tight, but the other has better highs.. So which would be better? See thats hard to figure out..lol But they all sound pretty good.. But even with that, i think alot of us could hear number 10, made a difference that most could hear.. was it the recording differece..or amp etc?? who knows.. Adrian does..lol thanks for the experiment..
