EL 84 brands--

Post by grndluxe »

other thans JJs and a lot of NOS stuff i can't afford right now, i've seen a couple of different name brands on ebay i was wondering if anyone had tried....
General Rohren---20 a pair + 6.50 ship(ad say NOS Reflektor from the 70s)
Mullard RI's--26.50 a pair + 10 ship
there are some others, but just threw these up. the TMB i have on the way has JJs in it. would like to have a 2nd set. i like a thicker sounding amp.

If you have the cash spring for a set of used Mullard EL84s...the proper ones not the reissues. One of the best EL84s ever made IMO.

I picked up a pair of TAD EL84s that are in my most recent 18. I haven't really put them through their paces yet, but I'm very pleased with what I've heard so far. I don't have any NOS tubes to compare to, but they're a little brighter and more open that the JJ's that I usually use.

Polams are cheap and sometimes come up on Ebay. I snag them when i can. They are dark but sound great  Tesla hex plates are great too....there a re a few people on various forums that sell them from time to time. I have also stocked up on them aswell as RFT and Mullard pulls

i've seen the polams. is anyone familiar with 'General Rohrens'? the guy selling them describes them as a rounder, not overly bright type of tube. thinking about pickup up a pair and trying them.

I have 2 sets of General Rohrens (for a 36W, 4 tubes). They biased in reasonably well and I think they sound great. I don't have any really valuable NOS tubes for comparison but I do have Tesla Hex plates and the Rohrens sound different but still very good. For the money they are hard to beat.
