O rings on tubes?
I recently saw a picture of an amp that had what looked like O rings on one of the tubes, and another tube looked like it had heat shrink or something similar on it. I am assuming this is to prevent/lessen microphonics. Has anyone tried or seen this before?

I picked up a bag of 100 silicon o-rings from Grainger for $5. The ones I got fit 12AX7 and the like. I threw a couple on a microphonic 6U8 and it helped quite a bit. The ones I ordered aren't as thick as the ones in the pictures, but at $0.05 each, I'll order another bag full of thicker ones.
I tried them on a really microphonic 6GH8 and they helped, but not enough. I'll try the thicker ones when I get them.

Oh, you can't use those, you have to get the audiophile ones that cost $5 each!a bag of 100 silicon o-rings from Grainger for $5
I was doubtful about O-rings having any effect but I tried them on some JJ 7591's that rang like crazy on certain notes, and they really work.
Mesa used to sell (maybe still does) some 12ax7s that came wrapped in heat shrink...

How do you think I can afford to keep building amps?PeterS wrote:Oh, you can't use those, you have to get the audiophile ones that cost $5 each!a bag of 100 silicon o-rings from Grainger for $5
Off the subject (and OT for 18watt, sort-of), I built a Plexi7591 (Plexi6V6 w/ 7591's) and it's an awesome sounding amp. I'm seriously thinking about doing a 30-watt with a pair of them. I think they would fit nicely sound-wise between EL84's and 6V6's and give a little more power. Yes, I'm serious about the 30-watt, not just trying to keep things relevant.PeterS wrote:

Considering that I can get 6 6U8A's or 6GH8A's for the price of a single used amperex EF86, I'll stick with the 'bandaid' for now.BooBird wrote:Nah. Just another tool. ?????????
