plexi valves opinions needed please.

Post by lespaulblues »

Hi i'm looking at some valves for my plexi amp that are on on flea bay and would like some feedback on how they sound if poss and are they worth the money. I'm staying away from mullards etc too expensive.
Pinnacle EL84 (x3) £15
Pair of Valvo EL84 Matching codes 1957 £45
Can anyone give me your 12ax7 opinions alternative to mullards.
What about pinnacle brimar or anything else i can try.
I've got rca svetlana and ge 12ax7's and sovtek el84's in my first plexi.
I've just built another one with a footswitch boost ( bloody good btw )
same sozo caps but different resistors so i can see if there is a difference.

NOS EL84s are never worth the money. They're one of the more expensive tubes, they don't sound that much better than new production, and they will wear out very quickly. The Pinnacles I'm pretty sure are Chinese or Russian re-brands.

Rather than buying NOS 12AX7s, I'd look for used ones that have been tested by a reputable dealer. Great deals and great tone there.

FWIW I'm pretty happy with my Miniwatts. Sgt Overdrive has them.
I have had pretty good luck with the 6N2P as well.
Actually, the only 12 AX7 I've NOT liked were the Sovtek 12ax7wa. Got really harsh distortion out of them.

Pinnacle were more likely to rebrand Tungsram than any other make, although they did rebrand Mullard, Tesla and RFT. Might be Russian or Polish, very unlikely to be Chinese.

And Brimar too. I agree that Pinnacle is too old a name to have rebranded Chinese tubes though.

sovtek 12ax7wa= oscillation like crazy, might work really good for creating oscillation in the original trem layout
I really like using 5751 in my plexi, sound a hair mellower

Strange you should mention it, but from a couple of sources, including Graydon (THE BOSS), the Sovtek 12AX7WA is actually the safest option to avoid oscillation in the original trem layout.

For reasonably priced, good sounding NOS tubes, try RFT's in the preamp and Tesla (not JJ) hexplates in the power amp.
