Having trouble finding CAPCAN with uncommon value

Post by mlannoo »

Capcans are harder to find than i thought they'd be. A Mouser rep told me they don't even carry them. Angela Instruments, Antique Electric and Hoffman do have them but i'm only finding 2 common values close to what I need.

I need:

40uf/40uf 450v

I can only find:

32uf/32uf 500v
50uf/50uf 500v

.... so, what do i do? what are the risks using a capcan under or over the correct value?

btw, this is for a Traynor Bassmaster YBA-1.

thanks

Mundorf make a 40/40 500v that costs an arm and a leg. Here's one supplier.

well most caps are +/- 10 or 20% anyway, I think you would do just fine with either the 32/32 or 50/50, not much risk either way really.

is that the general consensus? would you go lower or higher than the specified value? .... i guess the 32/32 is closer to 40 than 50/50.

thx

just buy 2 40uf caps. Wire them to a board and install...If you have room.

else youll have to pay big for the 'package' version.

PS. how do you like the sound of the yba-1? I built a yb2-a clone a while back and its my favorite amp. I thnk the yb2a is just a smaller cousin of the yba-1.

Both values are close to tolerance anyway. 50 will tighten the amp up, espeially in the low end. 32 will feel a little looser. It depends what you want the amp to sound/feel like, but I think the difference will be subtle.

I'd just go with discrete caps since they are cheaper and allow for better grouning but if you need a can, you can have Ted W**er make up one of his custom cans for you.

Ive had this same issue and went with the 50/50/500, feeling it was maybe better to go with the slightly higher value. It was a friends Traynor, and he was very pleased with the tone of the amp after doing the caps, and tubes, and a simple bias adjustment. :)

The YBA-1 is killer for guitar ... unfortunately, my bass player is using it thru a 4x10 traynor cab. we get tone compliments ALL THE TIME with that rig for bass ... probably because it's not the typical fender / ampeg sound that is so common.

to answer your question, i love the sound of the YBA-1 for guitar ... but not as much as my new GDS 36w TMB!!!! :D

was it a cathode biased traynor or no? should i be concerned with the bias if i replace the power tubes in the fixed cathode biased YBA-1?

I beleive the amp I was working on was the YGL3 Traynor MkIII. Its a 4 EL34,1 EL84, 7 12AX7 amp, that looks similar to twin reverb. Certainly a different beast from the YBA-1. :)

i would go to solen.ca and order parts # PPE3900

They are Solen Fast Caps. The flavor is Metallized Polypropylene.

They are a little big at roughly 2"x2.5" and will cost you around 15$ but...you will never have to replace them again.

Solen is almost as quick as Hoffman on ze shipping...

Eurotubes has a 20x20x20x40 500v for $15.00. You could parallel a couple of the 20's and us the 40 mfd.
