the dream
69SG;
i want you to know that i was not throwing cold watter on your thread.
my chemo was the day before and it takes me a little while to feel good again. from what i have read so far, it seems like the perfect question at the right time in so many of our lives.
i would also like everyone to welcome CHAPPY to our rankes along with all our new members. CHAPPY is the real deal. anyone of you who have thought that you have been in a bad-ass ride have NO idea what an F18 is. my father was a P47 and P51 driver in WII. he was also my flight instructer at age 14. you heard of the movie " The Great Santini?" that was my dad. boy, talk about fun.
i have spent the last 32 yrs keeping Chappy and everyone else who flys in the sky, from running into each other. was it my idea of music? ahh.. well no. i was doing solo gigs in a bar in burlinghton VT. the Millard Filmore, on Church street. payed me 25 bucks. my girl use to steel eggs from the store by putting them up the sleve of here coat. was i any good? well i thought so. but you got to live, so US AIR FORCE here i come. the rest is what hapens to all of us. time.
im typing this now after i have just spent 2hrs in the lab/shop. the amp im working on now was designed by Phil. i am having a great time doing simple things, ie: lead dress, grounding. i loose track of time when im down there and i like that.
if i could have one more hour of telling Chappy where to go, i would be very happy. my heart gave out and the wont let me talk to airplanes ever again. those BASTARDS.

What's really cool is that deep inside, anytime we pick up a guitar, dreams and intrigue can unfold right there on the spot.
Playing guitar has helped me get through some very tough times in my life. Dreams and aspirations may change, but in my case, the love affair, is always there.
Awe man, talk about memories, my ears are burning, my old Gibson Explorer is calling my name somewhere...

Have I tried an acoustic? I started out acoustic,,, violin in 4th grade. Then after two years of not quite enjoying stringed orchestra, it was traded in on an acoustic guitar. It was simply too huge for me, so I never got much out of it. But every time I pick up one, something special happens. I want to have one, and I will someday. I believe that Taylor has my name engraved on one of their fine guitars! But that's quite a ways down the road financially speaking.
Man, that sounds like it's one fine guitar! Does it do right by you? Got pics?

It must have been weird growing up with the Great Santini as a father. The false vomit part is my favourite part of his act.
Honestly, it must have been cool to have a dad that was a WWII fighter pilot. I may fly fighter planes now, but I will never know what it was like to be a part of something as big and as important as the "Big Show". We all still owe a big thanks to guys like your Father.
Next time I fly into Syracuse, I might just have to look you up and check out some of your builds.
Cheers

My Dad used to work on P51Ds in the 50s when he was in the air nat'l guard...he loves aviation talk. We went to England once and my sister's now ex-husband, who was stationed in the AF over there, brought us on base and let my dad fly the F-111 simulator, no visuals unfortunately. We also got to watch the A-10s and jaguars go through target practice from the tower. I tell you what....when the front canon on an A10 releases its rounds, it scares the crap out of you....you just see a puff of smoke and seconds later hear the loudest flatulence sound you ever heard....almost dropped my camera.

Re: dream over
So you revise your dream and take it up again. You can't be that guy, but you can be you!jem wrote:When I realized now matter how much I practiced, I'd never be able to play as well as this (old bandmate). 20 year hiatus followed.

BTW that guy sounds almost better than the original! I would love to know what kind of Strat and gear he's playing through, as he's got fantastic tone. You can really hear the woodiness of the Strat coming through - and I'm not even much of a fan of strats....

When I was still dreaming of becoming a pilot, I read a brilliant book called "The Big Show", written by WWII pilot, Pierre Clostermann (sp?). Inspired a spotty loverocker to join the Air Training Corp... which unfortunately was mostly about walking around in formation wearing clothes that didn't half itch.

My most awesome experience of jet fighters was on the ground. I went to The Falklands shortly after the war, and pootled around the islands looking at penguins. They still had Phantoms back then (the RAF, not the penguins), and the Falklands has no trees, nor tall man-made structures, and hardly any people. So the pilots could fly *very* low. And they did. I didn't so much hear the Phantoms as feel them shake my whole body while I desperately tried to stay upright. More visceral than standing in front of an angry SuperLead

I've a sneaking suspicion that the pilots kept a look out for people to sneak up on. Not difficult - my red cagoule must've stood out a bit

The F4 is one of my favorite fighters...mean machine. It's funny, when I graduated high school, I actually inquired with the airforce recruiters about piloting helicopters as I tried to figure out some kind of career path...unfortunately, they said i needed 20/20 vision without corrective lenses, even for cargo copters. That leaves me out because I'm as blind as a bat without glasses. Then, when they inquired about my other interests, they invited me to join the airforce band. -_- No thanks. About as close as I've come to my helicopter dream is a work-in-progress 3D model of an Apache I've been building on and off over the past year.

,,, via remote control,,,

via a computer simulation of RC planes...
Great fun really, plus you can "hover" (straight verticle, no forward or backward movement) without quickly plummeting straight downward. Talk about a great eye hand coordination test.
The hard part about flying RC aircraft is after you turn around and are flying back at yourself. Imagine being in the cockpit and suddenly someone turns your seat around 180 degrees! Talk about reverse gyroscope! The suggestion is to try to match your body's orientation to the planes direction and sort of look over your shoulder...
Dreams are cool.
Don't (just) give up!
Keep em alive!
