It's amazing at how quickly your chops atrophy. My band had a bit of a shake up recently and hadn't practiced in about a month. We were just awful for the first half of practice, then came on stronger towards the end. Everyone seemed to be in their own little world and no one had their chops down.

Record to 44.1khz mono wav since you're only using one mic. Then, find some software to convert wav to mp3. As far as recording,,,you may have the monitor knob up so it sounds louder in the cans but you really want to the input level to be as high as possible without clipping...should have input meters on the unit so you can check as you raise the input levels.
