Adding a gain stage

Post by pauldavidson1991 »

Hello guys,

My question is about adding an extra gain stage.

Specifically, where to physically put the extra tube.

As im sure you all know, there is a lot of room to do this in a 100Watt amp

But not so much in an 18Watt.

Where is the best place?

Just asking before I start cutting ;)

Thanks in advance

Paul

It very much depends on what you are starting with. Can you tell us what version you have and add some pics of the chassis top and guts? Have you looked in the downloads section to see if there are any options already proven that look like what you are planning?

In principle you will be wanting it close to where it sits in the circuit, i.e. right alongside the current preamp stage. Long wiring runs are a bad idea especially in the front end. So it is not just the valve you need to accommodate but also the additional components and presumably a switching arrangement.

Edit: Just had a quick look at Downloads. There are plexi style schematics and high gain schematics available there. You may need to read some of the threads to find equivalent layouts.
