ECC83s or ECC83

Post by davemojo »

Hi All,
I have made some researches between the difference for the ecc83s and the ecc83 and it seems that ecc83s is if I can use the word more "aggressive" apparently typically used on Marshall Amps?

I am building the classic 18Watts I am done already with the build and need to purchase tubes

Mullard or Tung Sol but both at Tonefactory.nl or Banzaimusic only have ECC83 it is not specified "s" however other brands like JJ do have ecc83s

What shall I do here? For the JJ, I was told to stay away, since they are no good, can I use Mullard ecc83?
My Amp mainly is going to be used with 2x 12" Celestion G12M 25 watts for an Organ B3 and for a clone Crumar Mojo, I also play Guitar for blues sound

Suggestions? Also where to buy from tubes? I'm in Amsterdam Europe

Thanks

I have checked the specs for the 18 watts Marshall 74x

Preamp valves
2 x ECC83, 1 x ECC83 (phase splitter)
Power amp valves
2 x EL84
Rectifier
1 x EZ81

I want to have the same since I like the sound of it I plugged the reissue of this amp with my Organ can anybody suggest best online shop for price value for the above items? Also I see here Marshall used ECC83 + ECC83 phase splitter, what that means?

Don't overthink the "special" tube designation. A lot of the time things like that are mostly marketing. Mullard over JJ any day of the week.

Side note: the circuits are based on the 1974. 1974X is the reissue of the same thing.

I found the following tubes from Mullard at Tonefactory.nl

Preamp valves
2 x ECC83, 1 x ECC83 (phase splitter)
Power amp valves
2 x EL84
Rectifier
1 x EZ81

The phase splitter seems to be what we commonly call the balanced

on the schematic starting from the tube socket V1 towards V6 where would I put the balanced one? is that going to be the V3 before power amp valves?

Thanks

There is no need for balanced tubes in an 18Watt. Imbalance makes the tone more complex and is even desireable for that matter. Balanced tubes are for hifi and fixed bias amps...don't waste your money on balanced tubes.

I like the new production Mullard CV4004. They are a bit too fat to fit in some of the the shielded sockets though.
