Oldie

I picked up this very early clone of a Marshall 18 watt. Needs some serious reflow of solder ect but a fun project nonetheless. Looks like 2001 build :)

I like the tube lineup. 6CA4 is a good, solid rectifier for this load.

Yeah not sure why such large eyelets. The pics make them look larger than they actually are, however still way larger than they are required to be.

I prefer a 6CA4 rectifier. Once its resurrected will post some thoughts and tweak the tone.

6CA4 same as EZ81. It is THE rectifier for model 1974.

Good question. I’m not sure. They are MPP 473J capacitors. The amp needs screen resistors and dress lead cleaned up, pots replaced and now sings. Has a nice compressed feel with chime on high notes. The tremolo just shimmers. Cranked it just sings :) For reference it trumps my Retro King 18

I would assume that MPP means Metalized PolyPropylene. There's nothing wrong with radial electrolytics as long as they're decent quality...which most are.

This amp sounds killer. It has the perfect blend of chime and warmth. Compressed nicely and the overdrive is focused and tight. No fizz whatsoever. The tremolo has a nice pulse and at low settings just shimmers. Compared to my Retro King 18 it has less clean headroom but more organic warmth,
and feels less stiff. I feel more connected to it musically if that makes any sense. I tried it through a pair of 67’ Vox silvers, a 70s blackback and a pair of 74’ creambacks. All sound good with merits :)
