IMO V30s are just too bright for EL84 amps.
+1 for sure.

Using one now in my Blue Junior, and it is a lovely speaker for the money. Really nice full presentation with absolutely no ice picks - not that it sounds wooly and without HF, it's just very good at keeping things in balance.

I'm interested in trying the C-Rex speakers also. I have a Tone Tubby that sounds awesome, and from what I've read, Tone Tubby makes/licenses the hemp cones in the C-Rex speakers.

Yes, I believe it's true that Eminence buys the hemp cones from Brownsoun (Tone Tubby). Just be aware that C-Rex speakers are known for taking quite a lot of breaking in....

I finally got around to trying a C-Rex. It sounded really good, but tossed 1000 ice picks in my ears. I don't know if that's relevant to break in or not, but it was definitely too bright for my amp.

I put a Cannabis Rex in my last 5E3 build and I thought it sounded darker, relative to the stock Jensen I had earlier. Good to know about the Tone Tubby cone licensing, though. I've wondered if the Tone Tubby habit is worth the expense, I've never played one.

Keep in mind that it's all relative. I'm sure it was darker, but compared to the WGS BlackHawk I put in, it was brighter.

ToneTubby speakers are good, but I don't know if they're really worth the price. Though if my only options were Celestion, Scumback, or ToneTubby, it would be ToneTubby every time. There's always used speakers though for personal builds.

I just use a dark humbucker guitar to roll off the treble. Strat sounds great if not cranked up all the way…

I have found Tone Tubby speakers (both ceramic and alnico) to be too bright for my own tastes, especially with Marshall 18W type amps.
My current favourite speakers are vintage Celestions.

Dial the 18W to vol 8... an old G12h30.. things ain't going to get much better than this😉😁👍
I could have sworn I saw the devil's tail sticking out of the back of my amp! Turned out to be the AC cable

Bieworm,

You may have mentioned it once before, but is your G12H30 a 55Hz or 75Hz version?

my 2cts on the 55 vs 75Hz hype:

55Hz = great for home playing. tighter bass, less treble.. nice for home use (for guitarists anyway)
75Hz = better cut through the mix in a band situation. With the 55Hz you tend to get a bit lost in the mix, especially when you use the amp's natural overdrive instead of stomp boxes. With a plain 18W and a G12H30 75Hz you don't need to 'enhance' anything... that marriage just works!

That said, I'm a treble guy myself, so I'm just as happy with a V30 for that matter.. regardless it's reputation.. I like 'em. They're woody and pretty spikey, but ..me likey :D :D :D

It is a very good speaker. It rolls off some top end, BUT it's not dark. The only downside to consider is that it is VERY efficient.
