Have you tried blanking one of the vacant holes to hear what effect that might have?
No, I have not.
How did you go about testing the correct phase that you describe in point number 2?
Just by listening. The difference was pretty clear, to me.

I like using a detuned 2x12 cab. I prefer only one speaker in the cab. I currently have two speakers in it, to test them out independently and together. It sounds great in all setups, but my favorite so far is definitely with only one speaker in the cab, and the open space around it.

I actually will give it a try with detuned 4x12 too. I was able to get a pair of G12H Blackbacks from 1976, can’t wait to try this out!

Fwiw the 1976 marking on the frame ain't the date code. I thought mine was a '76 too until someone with better knowledge of those speakers told me that is was more likely an earlier one derived from an orange cab. Even better in terms of age 😉

I just love mine!!! Awesome piece of noisemaker!!!

That is interesting! I’ve also read that early Blackbacks probably have Pulsonic cones and not the Kurt Müller cones. Either way, I am sure they will sound great! I will let you know I had the time to install them.

I finally had the time to try my 2 Blackbacks G12H in a 4x12 cab. I mounted them diagonally and left the other two spots open.
It was probably the best sound I had so far or even heard in real life. Compared to modern Greenbacks it sounded much smoother, more balanced and defined (especially string definition). I was able to crank my 18 watter all the way without getting muddy sounds. I am not sure if the speakers are just awesome or if the detuning contributed a lot to the sound. Anyways, I recommend giving the detuning a try!

That's great! Thanks for posting your experience. Are your speakers 8 ohms, wired in series for 16 ohms, or 16 ohms wired in parallel for 8 ohms?

I wired two 8 ohm speakers in series for 16 ohms!

I'm just reading through this, it's very interesting.

Question: How does the detuning 4 x 12/ 2 x 12 setup compare with an open-back bluesbreaker style cabinet?

I actually never played my 18 Watter with a bluesbreaker cab. I am, however, planing a comparison video with a friend about detuned 4x12 and fully loaded 4x12. Maybe also compare detuned 4x12 with fully loaded 2x12. I will keep you updated!
