Makes good sense to me.

I'll chime in with an endorsement of Ramiro's faceplates. Great service, great-looking faceplates.

There's another approach - home etching. There's a smart dude on the LP Forum who's done some very cool plates - and with no specialist equipment. I bookmarked the thread where he (John Catto) described how he did it, because I thought about doing the same for an amp faceplate:

Not got around to trying it yet

I'm a newbie here. I have a good friend who does engraving on rocks and glass and metal and even Strat pickguards. I've attached a link to a page. If it shows up , you'll see a sample of Willie Foster on a piece of sandstone. He takes photographs and makes shields that stick to the surface. He then does precision sandblasting and cuts into the surface to varying depths to give a 3-D effect. I've got a silver dollar sized Jimi H. in sandstone on my guitar strap for inspiration.
I hope this helps

Yeah, amazing, but over-decorated and gross to the point of being totally obscene - a complete travesty of what the Gibson LP is about. The guy's clearly gotten so carried away with his skills, he's fallen headfirst into producing total kitch. I admired his superb handiwork, but otherwise felt like I was going to throw up, if I looked at that guitar for too long. Give me a real LP Goldtop or PRS Custom any day...

"a complete travesty of what the Gibson LP is about."

Phil, he is copying a Bigsby, not an LP. Actually, it looks like a pretty good copy of the Bigsby Merle Travis.

Sorry, I can't resist this. That would be a "travis-ty". But I agree with you, Phil, elegant simplicity and clean lines are more to my liking. But I guess if you are an accomplished woodworker/luthier, it's more fun and more of a challenge to re-create something like that than a classic LP.

Phil, chill out man. It's a tribute (as Newt has explained) - from one very talented guitar maker to someone who played a very important role in the development of the electric guitar (rather earlier than the LP, too).

Same guy has also made this (Phil, you definitely shouldn't click any of the following links ;) ):

http://www.mondocatto.pwp.blueyonder.co ... top-08.jpg
http://www.mondocatto.pwp.blueyonder.co ... back-1.jpg - now *that's* what I call mahogany 8)

Again - it's another tribute to a great guitar maker. It's all about manufacturing vs craftsmanship. The world needs both. IMHO :)

Well I'm relieved that it wasn't intended to be an LP derivative, although it has some passing similarities. And I certainly have no problem with the incredible craftsmanship, just what's been done with it. Tribute or not, that guitar is just simply gross to the extent of making you want to puke. That's the kind of guitar I'd rather not be seen dead with.

 Um... it's the LP that's guilty of 'passing similarities'. Not just Gibson - Leo Fender was also guilty of ripping off Bigsby and Travis. Got to say that anything that reminds us of who really deserves credit is A Good Thing in my book.

And Jim Marshall ripped off Leo Fender and Watkins in his amp designs...

And similarly it looks like Gibson's "rip off" was huge improvement on the original kitch....
