What's the 220k resistor to gnd just before the first stage filter caps doing?
I realize it's a voltage divider - is it just to reduce rail voltage?
Also the 1k resistor between the 32uf + 32uf shows 10 watts on the schematic - 5 watts on the layout. Which is adequate?

Can't wait to fire it up - maybe this weekend...

Sorry I can't help with your schem questions, but is this the amp you used an EF86 in? If so please post clips and/or descriptions of how it sounds, when you get it fired up.

From what you describe its a bleed reistor, doesn't drop the voltage in use, just brings the HV down steadily and fairly quickly when you switch off. Stops you getting zapped half an hour after you switch off! Usually 100k - 220k. Discharges the caps just for safety. I always fit them.

As Nigel said, it's just a bleeder resistor. I always fit them as well.

Bleeder - of course! Why didn't I see that('cause I don't know much...). I seem to have a bad GZ34 - arcing even before it's off stand-by. Waiting on a new one.
Will post pics/sounds asap.

RWood - hows yer AKAI SE? That's still the best sounding amp I've got OR ever played ...

The Akai got bumped off the bench by a few other projects, but I can't wait to get back into it this fall.
I'm leaning towards a November front end, no tone controls, and the cathode follower. Replacing one of the preamp triodes with an EF86 would be really desireous but then I'd have 2 1/2 preamp tubes

so I'm not sure what to do.
Have you figgered out how you're using your EF86?

I'm using the EF86 in my 36watt+tremelo channel.
I wonder what majic (if any) the AKAI trans impart. The more I play that amp the better it gets. 1 12AX7, 1 EL84 and 6X4 rectifier. I can supply curcuit if you want(or did I do that?). Have it running a box with a Jensen 10" (from a 60's Princeton) and an Oaktron 10" that sounds honky like a celestion - 2 input jacks to select from. Both different - both great.
