A rebirth...after 65 years!
Hey, guys-
Just finished restoring a Sound Projects Inc. K100 guitar amp Circa.1938.
A couple of subtle mods; slightly higher gain in one input, a screen grid bypass cap and an extra stage of filtering, but otherwise pretty close to the original circuit.
Tube compliment: 6C8G, 76, 6L6G, 80 and a Rola field-coil speaker. Could be as late as early '40s, but I doubt it.
Sounds warm and bluesy as can be. Nice breakup, low volume (perfect for apartment dwellers such as myself) and best of all, it looks like an old table radio!
Just thought I'd share.
Peace-
Ethan

Cool - that sounds like my retro projects.. a picture, please?
Field coil speakers have intrigued me for some time. I have a 12" (no-name) from a 1940:s large console radio/gram here which I intend to put in a similar project of mine, but the amp will be a Gibson BR6F clone, field coil spkr and all.
Ethan - please let me know what pitfalls and other experiences you had with FC speakers ......and please, a picture and a soundclip?
Cheers /Richard

Most amps i've seen through about 1949 had those FC speakers.. I worked on an old epiphone that had one..which i changed the OT..
which i mounted on a new speaker frame..and the new speaker..
kinda of an upgrade.. I think i have a few NOS FC speaker..Quam or something.. but they are small ones like 8 or 6 "
but very easy to upgrade to use a regular speaker..wich gives you more choises of speakers to use. but there ok stock if everything is ok..

I actually wanted to use the FC speaker for the sheer fun of doing something really really retro, old-style....a blues roots thing...to get a clone of that old BR6F working would probably give me another boost towards learning more blues licks & picks and maybe some slide too..
Well, time will tell - first, there´s a few 18Watters that need to be built
and then there´s an all-octal AMpeg Reverbrocket (1st issue) waiting to be built, and then maybe....

Some of those B-15N amps make great guitar amps/tweaked more toward guitar than bass..and use the octal preamps.. the thing with those, you have to find some good octal preamp tubes.. they can be really different from one to the next. it takes a while to find good ones.
oh by the way.. the B15 i did that to was a early 70s..and was mostly something someone had throw away..lol

Well, to be honest I've been very lucky with field-coils. All that I've worked on have worked. The only time it gets a little troublesome is when they don't. Then you've got to find a way to replace the field-coil with a choke (or a resistor) in the power supply. Often it doesn't fit. But, as I said, I've been really lucky. This one was odd because the field-coil was in parallel with the first filter cap, not in series. I've only seen that done in old radios 'til now.
That Gibson clone sounds like a very cool project indeed! I've got another late '30s wonder (an Epiphone Electar) waiting it's turn for rebuilding, but it's gotta wait. The lead guitarist in my band is going to give me his Blackface Pro if I rebuild his Silvertone Twin-Twelve. How could I pass THAT up?
As for pictures and sound clips, I'm a bear of very little brain. I don't even have a digital camera, but if I can figure something out I'll definitely post.[/quote]
