Agreed... but use excellent tubes for ALL stages. If you use a bad tube for the PI then you could sound just terrible.

hi, yes I have all JJ 's in the amp, but I wanted to try a RCA NOS 12ax7

in the TMB's tone slot..I put it in the v1..& it changed to drasticly it was kind of dull, i could get more gain out of the pre-amp volume..seemed like the sustain was gone in the notes, i guess the jj' sounds best there ..because i put the tube in v-3 & it has sustain & it tamed the TMB channel a bit , i kind of like it !..it seems a little more bassy though...just a touch..but it has a richer sounding od/dis...more defined on the lower notes E & A ...well i'm still working w/ it ...so thanks for the advice,,Nik from ceriatone e-mailed me last night & told me v1 & v3 , for the tone stack...so , i like it better in v3 , by far , thanks again for the advice/info

There is a lot of variation in the gain of NOS tube types - the 12AX7 has a nominal gain of 100, but some types put out more (118 for a Mullard is not unusual), some types put out less (5751 only has a nominal gain of 75, but very low noise). Also, long plate types and Brimar tend to become microphonic if shields are not fitted. Before you get just what you want, soundwise, there's an awful lot of try it and see what happens ...
