It seems to me that most people could not tell what was in their amp if they themselves did not install or didn't SEE what kind of tubes were installed. It's the whole "Pepsi Challenge" thing. Sure, a lot of us would know our own gear enough to say, "that sounds weaker" or "not enough harmonics", etc., but not "oh, that's a Mullard" or "that's a Sovtek". There is enough validity in that some tubes do better in some amps than others. But maybe the point is, "what tubes sound best when I play this guitar through that amp?"

Unless you play NOS Mullards, it is hard to "get it". The ECC83s are so superior a tube it is ridiculous. When I used my first set I was astounded at the difference in every amp I tried them in.

I actually acquired several NOS Mullards when we bought our house. They were left over by previous owners from YEARS ago. They were for and old Webcor console stereo that they also left behind (it's now my workbench ). They perform great in all of my amps, but I think, for instance, my tone sounds better with the GE's and Sylvanias in my '66 Reverberocket and my Bandmaster Reverb than either of those amps with the Mullards.
