Help me find figured mahogany

Post by loverocker »

This is a long shot :) but here goes:

I'm about to order a guitar, but I want figured (quilted, crotch, etc) mahogany. Something like the gorgeous wood on:

If any of you guys happens to know of a lumber stockist that has such highly figured tonewood, please drop me a line. Ta :)

I wonder if you contact John Catto he might be able to help you out. I know he hangs out on the LPF and guitarrefinishing.com on occasion. Here's a post of his on guitarrefinishing where he introduces his new creation: Link

I don't know much about dealers in the UK, but Luthier's Mercantile in California carries beautiful tonewoods.

Peace-

Thanks chaps. Had already emailed JC - no reply yet. I'll do a search for that luthier place in CA, too.

loverocker,
Another source of figured Hardwoods is Dunlap Woodcrafts in Chantilly, VA. Email Daniel Miranda (shop mgr) at Dunlaps3@Compuserve.com phone 703-631-5147
Over the years I've obtained excellent curly maple and curly cherry from them. I've also spotted some curly mahogany in their warehouse at times. Tell Daniel what your trying to find and let him check out what they have. They ship Internationally.
Regards,
Rob

Thanks for those extra leads guys. :)

I found similar mahogany - fiddleback and beeswing - mentioned on some other lumber sites, but never any prices - always "price on availability/application". Sounds like sticker shock ahead 8O

I'll let you know how I get on... :)

Try this website. I get my wood from them. But I have never gotten mahogany.

I have some killer mahogony...and some other stuff too. not as figured as the pic but lots of beautiful ribbons and occasional flares. I also have a pretty good source for getting bubinga veneers that are exceptionally figured.

check out the bottom two http://www.sweetwoodguitars.com/signature.cfm

also, how much board feet do you need.

Thanks again fellas.

Some beautiful guitars there, Sweetwood :) Love that HENT. I only need enough wood for one guitar body (DC Les Paul shape). But I want it to be 1-piece (no laminate) so I think that needs to be at least 8/4.

I'd be interested to see the mahogany you mention. If you've got photos, please email them, I'd appreciate it: loverocker@NOSPAMfirstmail.com Apart from that Catto guitar (he's ignored my emails - I guess he wants to keep his source secret!), the only other pix of this stuff that I've seen are at:

The place I get it wouldn't help you out. They are basically a commercial yard. You can't touch anything less than 16', not to mention a minimum order. I could mail you a blank but I don't think its exactly what you are looking for. Anyway, good luck.

Actually, Sweetwood, although I can't use such a big amount, the luthier (Ron Thorn, another CA maker) almost certainly could. He has some lightly figured stuff in stock, but is now searching for the figured stuff I want.

I'm still interested in seeing any pix you have - just to edjumacate myself about what sort of stuff is out there.

You could give Christoph Dolf at www.bassculture.de a call - his English is pretty good.
Say I passed you on to him for extra smily service.
email is info@bassculture.de
He can get hold of pretty much anything for you but is not likely to have it in stock.
