6 watt DIY Kit?
Hi Folks,
I'm new here.
Found you from the Mission Amps website.
I've looked in the search field here, but have not found what I was looking for.
So if this question has been asked before, please forgive.
Looking to build my own amp.
A low watt for studio use.
The Cornford Harlequin clips sound great.
The cabinet size is interesting!
Is there a DIY kit or ANY intrest in this design?
Also, are there any mods going on with the Fender Pro Jr.?

Ditch Gator, hows it going..and Welcome.
Alot of people have been building lite version amps, and some use a power soak,so you can have more like two amps in one. One low volume, and then can also use it to play through..louder.
Some have used the Pro Jr. And Graydon has a faceplate plexi panel made for those.
Have you also heard James Peters amps? I think hes up in Canada..He has some nice clips, and hangs out on some amp boards sometimes.
http://www.petersamps.com/
There is also the AX84 site, and they have some good small amp builds.Phil hangs out there and may have some more info.
Mods for the Jr. yeah blue guitar site has some mods for that amp. And its open to many more depending on what you wanted.

The High Octane over at http://www.ax84.com is scarily close to the Harlequin in terms of features, and actually sounds nicer too (in a double blind test)

I built the Hi-Octane from Chris' kit at Doberman. I added the lo-power 6n1p option and I haven't put the EL84 (SV83 actually) back in since I wired that in. The reason is that I can crank it up and it's just about right, maybe still a little too loud.
The SV83 was loud enough that my wife had to walk out into the yard to talk on the phone when I was upstairs with the door closed. The 6N1P tube is louder than a TV. I have an Altair attenuator from the seventies that I put on -4dB and it brings things back down to Earth.
Good luck!

Yes, six tube watts can be suprisingly loud. I had furniture shaking when I played the six-watter I used to have. The High Octane can be a little harsh to some ears with the EL84 outout tube, but it can be easily moidded to use octal tubes, like EL34s or KT88s. Check out these samples of an amp Paul Ruby built, which uses different output tubes - http://www.attentiontodesign.com/ruby-ho/

If you're feeling really bold, just find a copy of a schematic and layout for any of the Fender Champ or early Princeton amps. They can be downloaded from a variety of places on the web, and the old Fender layout diagrams are so clear, they're practically a kit.
Buy a chassis and some transformers and go to town. 3-5 Watts, and one of the most classic amp designs ever!
If you'd rather go with step-by-step instructions, check out the projects at AX-84.com, or pick up a champ-like kit from someone like David Allen at Allen Amplification.
Your possibilities are practically endless.
Have Fun-

Thanks for the warm welcome and all the good ideas.
I always wanted to build a combo as it would be all one piece.
Now the thinking is to build a head and use my existing amp(s) as a cabinet.
The idea of a truly throaty, dynamic low wattage amp appeals to my ideal of a perfect studio amp.
The cabinet of the Cornford Harlequin is quite unusal in size relative to its 12" speaker. Perhaps this has ALOT to do with the way it performs?
I do not have a cabinet with these specs.
Has anyone here experimented with cabinet size relative to a 12" speaker?
The only reason I have not bought a kit as of yet is the fear of not understanding enough of the information to put it all together.
Some of you, like me, probably have had some experience in DIY projects in the past.
You get all fired up, roll your sleeves up and tear the packaging apart to find that there is something missing, has a couple of wrong parts, arriving with the wrong plans and no hope for support.
For my FIRST foray into the world of amp building, the way that seems to make the most sense (to me) is the AX84 projects or something like the Emery type units. Very low watt amps.
However the cabinet design and its effect on a 12" speaker (or 2-10") is what is keeping me from pulling the trigger.
Until that information makes itself clear, to build a combo or head is the question.
I am very excited and hope to achieve the goal of having a dynamic amp that can be used in the studio that has been built with my own hands.
Learning and hopefully saving a bit of $ in the proccess.
Keep on Jammin'

Guitar speaker cab design is a very inexact science. Don't worry about it. Anything of roughly around the size will work. Then you can experiment with open back, closed back, half open/closed and front-vented cabs. Also Cornford in common with many other commercial builders use Celestion Vintage 30 speakers, which a lot of DIY builders and amp enthusiasts find somewhat nasal sounding, due to a higher-midrange emphasis. I think Cornford and the others get a real good price deal from Celestion on V30s, so they tweak their amp voicing to compensate. for the high midrange....

As you can see we help every one that we can. No matter if they buy a kit from someone else,or shop out there own parts. Also we have the BBq for off topic 18 amps, and we've helped people discuss things there. Graydons support for his kits is top notch. I can't speak for the other places that sell the kits,i haven't used them. Another thing that alof of forums don't have or use,and it helps very much..we have a troubleshooting gallery. So if you have a digital camera, the person can post pics there, and we can look over the amp for mistakes.
There seems to be many more kits offered now for amps, and some really good ones. Here, bruce Collins 5E3 site..another great amp..And AX84..
Weber, mojo, have amp kits. And many others. You just have to figure out what you want to build..lol And once you build one..You will be hopping to build a next project.

After surfing around, I have to say that 18watt.com has given me what I feel is the support I will need to continue on with my amp questions.
Thanks!
Yes, the project is on as of now.
I will order a kit and start on it in July.
If successful, the need for an 18watt has not been filled.
I will look forward to letting you know how that one progresses as well.
This is going to be a blast!
If I can be of any help (albeit limited in my knowledge) to anyone, it would be a pleasure.
