FIREFLY - BEST REV? 1,2 or 3

Post by KHStudio »

zaphod_phil has mentioned this amp a few times & I am almost finished mine (rev 3). To me the samples sound great.

Does anyone here have a favorite version...revision 1,2 or 3 that you like better for one reason or another?

Just curious.

Also, what cab or speaker does it sound good with?
And how does the resonance control work & sound?
... is it worth putting in?

Thank,
kevin

I've built ver 2

On my version 2 I use a EV12L in a open back that sounds really good. Also works great with a Vintage 30 closed back. I have used the resonance control but don't have it in right now. I added a master volume which I like a lot. It lets you get all kinds of gain and compression at whisper level. It let's me play during the one year old nap time.

Right now I have Chinese 12AX7's in it that sound nice.

My site has some pictures and MP3s.

I hate to be a party pooper, but this is really a question for discussion on the AX84 board, where the Firefly builders (including Firefly designer DougH) hang out - or at least in the BBQ section. I think you would agree that it's not really an 18W Technical Discussion issue....

Well, seeing as the rev 3 is a slight tweak of rev 2, dont think rev 2 really counts. And, given the fact I am a die hard metal head, would put me favour of rev 3, and its footswitchable, so its like, rev 1 + 3 joined together :P

Sorry dude.

You are correct.

But, it would have been cool if you could have given a responce to the question since you where the one I was looking for to help me the most. You did mention this thing a few times and how good it was, no? :?

Anyway, thanks for the helpfull replies. Next time I'll post in the right spots.

I did once recommend the Firefly as a good choice for a low power build, with a Marshall sound, somewhat in the same vein as the 18W. However, I'm afraid I've never had the time to build one myself!

Do you know whether a layout exists for this little guy? Also, do you have any info on how to wire up the master volume to it?

Well, I just finished my Firefly and this thing is super KILLER.
Its actually beyond belief how great this thing sounds. I recomend it.

I'll be posting some pics & sound cips on my web site as soon as I get a chance.

Also, I'm working on turning several different models of Hammond organ amps into 18 watters.

I'll be posting the results & clips of those when they are done.

Thanks Kevin
