Hey Gary,
did you ever think people mmight be thinking that YOU might steal their designs...??? also ever hear of the term PATENT or COPYWRITE yes my spelling is bad.. but anyway the size of your ego is astounding...!!!!! 8O the only reason you are here on 18watt is because I was on your site telling people about all the talent here on the 18watt site and a few of those people came over here discovered the great talent here!! and And all the talented people here do NOT have an incessant need to be worshiped like you!!! And if you want to compare your resume` against some of the talent here….well I think it would make YOU look like a bagger boy at Kroger. !!!!! So I suggest you get your ego in check..

Mr. Moore, If you want to share your knowledge with us, I'm sure we would all appreciate it. But, If you come here sounding like a kid on the play ground saying, "I know something you don't know and I'm not going to tell you", that just brings out the worst in everyone. If you don't want to share something, don't say anything at all.

I guess next you're gonna reinvent the wheel.

Perhaps Mr. Moore is acting on the old saying "any public relations are good public relations" meaining that if you can't generate good PR generate bad PR ... at least you'll get noticed.

I vote for ignoring him. At least that way we won`t inadvertantly end up bringing attention to him, his company and his products.

"Yes, the ride is a little rough, but look at the bright side. When you park on a hill, your car won't roll away. The corners on my redesigned wheel will hold it in place."

That wasn't really necessary either. Sorry. :?

Sounds like EGO and a fear of failure. What if the great secret revealed fails to garner it's claimed results, what are people going to think then....

Here's an article on ferrite beads that suggests RFI can enter equipment through speaker wires or the power cords. Don't know whether you've approached the problem from that end of the amp.

http://www.howstuffworks.com/framed.htm ... /beads.htm

Also someone in another forum post has suggested trying ferrite beads on the inputs.

good luck

You can always put filters on the mains and inputs too.

I think if you do some research and keep asking questions, you'll be able to ferret out most of the issues.

noise

Post by floridajack »

mlannoo,

does it still make noise if you set up in a different house (far away from your neighborhood.)

i have a 36er that's dead quiet at my house, but picks up yankee's games at my guitarist's house.

Hey man, try a high value cap right at the input jack to ground (from the positive terminal of the input jack to the chassis). That will shunt the RF to ground before it has a chance to reach your input stage.

To me, this is kind of a last resort type thing. You can end up sending your treble to ground, which may not be what you are after.

I had an old amp that would pickup radio stations also. In my case it was a grounding issue (don't ask me why I have no idea) I added the the three prong wall plug and it elimanted the problem I'm not sure how that affected it at all but it did =/

Mooreamps wrote: ok, ok. In my pre-amp, here is how I address this problem.

1. Replace the input grid stop resistor with a short.
2. Install a 100 pF 1 KV cap from plate to control grid.
3. Pull the input stage grid leak resistor. It serves no purpose
since the first gain stage gets it's ground reference point through
the cable, through the coil of the pick-up, back through the cable,
and then back to your pre-amp dc ground buss. With the pick-ups
in my black guitar, the dc impedance is about 1 K.
4. Isolate the input jack off chassis ground and run shielded cable
to the card. Attach the shield ground to the chassis, and terminate
the other end approprietly.
5. Pull the cathode resistor and cathode cap, replace with Ultra-Bright
LED. Mount UB LED on front panel for BITE lamp.

There, no more radio interference. No, I don't think anyone else
does it this way. But now they will.

Well, I don't have RF in my amps, either, and I'm sure not gonna go through all that trouble.... Seems like there are a lot of other ways to do this that are less complicated and don't require a complete remake of the 1st stage.

To each his own, I guess.

Gary, maybe when you make statements like this you should put a little smiley face after it, like this :nerd: or this  ya know what I mean? :rol:

Please try to lighten up a little. Most people are here for fun and knowledge. I feel that you're too serious. Don't you want to have fun?

I feel that deep inside, you're really a good guy. Don't you think it's time to let that good guy out?

Look at Phil, he's a really nice guy. Most everyone loves him. Maybe you're a better engineer than him. Maybe you're not. I'm not qualified to judge that. And I really don't care, along with most everyone else.

If you want everyone to like you, be kind to them and they'll be kind to you. No more nah.. nah.. nah I know it and you don't - that makes me better than you  Gary, Gary,Gary :(

Just help everyone you can, you'll get paid back.

Good luck

It was nice of you to give up that information. See, you're changing for the better already!

Mooreamps wrote:I wasn't trying to nah nah anyone. If people read this post, they will begin to realize just how simple and effective it really is. I am not so much worried about people inside the community seeing my magic. I was more concerned about people outside looking in, like engineers from Carvin, Soldano, other high end boutique amp makers, and even designers like Dumble.

OK, but I fail to see what is so revolutionary about your proposal...

Local feedback loop on the 1st triode? That's been done since the 1930s. Personally, I don't care for the method unless absolutely necessary.

Elimination of the grid leak... I'm neither here nor there on that one. I normally use one since every schematic in the world shows it, but I just built a couple of amps for Tab Benoit in which I left them out to accomplish the kind of input jack wiring he wanted. It makes quite a bit of sense to use the grid leak, because it allows the designer to have some control over the initial impedance of the circuit.

Isolate the input jack? Ummm... DUH!

Shielded wire? Also DUH!

LED in place of the cathode R/C pair? Been published in dozens of Hi-Fi rags.

While we're at it, why not suggest biasing the amp with 250 LEDs? Then planes could land by his amp and you could claim another special technique.

Sorry to be a jerk, but I think you've kind of encouraged it with your attitude. There's nothing new in what you're saying. It would probably work, but no better than the old tried and true methods. And it is certainly nothing to get all uppity about.
