What's the TMB version like

Post by gahboo »

Hello, new guy here.

I have recently finished a SE Class A amp from AX84 and am looking for a next build with more... what shall I say... power, volume, chime. I noticed the great MP3s and am definitely interested int he 18 watt.

In looking at schems, i was attracted to the TMB version. Am I right in understanding that the TMB is essentially a two channel 18 watt with one channel with more flexible tone plus a Master Volume? This is interesting because much of my playing is done at low volumes. Can I expect the 18 watt tones I heard in the MP3's from the TMB version?

This looks to be a great site. I will have lots of fun exploring it.

Thanks

You landed in the right place... Welcome!

You are quite right about the TMB. There you have the option of having a stock 18 watt channel (Normal), and a TMB/MV.

If you are thinking of getting great tone at low volumes, you might look into building the stock 18watt and use an attenuator (eather from Weber or the recently discussed attenuator that you can make it yourself)

In fact I am just now polishing up the TMB layout including Richie's (Plexi) tweaks too so stay tuned and enjoy the club!

Take care,
Gabi.

There are some TMB sound files. The TMB is for people that didn't want the trem. So it was added as an option. Since alot of us are builders and experimenters. Its nothing more than a plexi or bassman type circut, without a feedback circut. Its very tweakable. I'm sure others that have built it can tell what there amp sounds like. Seems alot of people like it.

If you are looking for a blues amp - build the normal 18 or an 18 lite. If you are looking for the AC/DC - Zep Plexi crunch, build the TMB.

I have built lots of 18 watters and I have settled on the 36 watt TMB with MV. Always built in a head chassis for head or combo installation or portability.

The ultimate flexibility ?

Volume, Power, Tone, Crunch at low volume if wanted, a seperate ' bigger ' 18W type channel, a great rich non tinny sound with an electrified acoustic.
Suits Strats or les Pauls

All from one more Knob !!

Steve: I'm still slowing getting my 36 together, sockets, and heaters are wired, transformers mounted, backplate on,and got to put the controls in and wire up the trannys.
But as with the AC15..thats where the AC30 evolved. And i think when more try the 36 watter they will like it more than the 18. Although the 18 still fits sometimes better for small gigs. but when you need the extra poop, the 36 watter is going to have it. I'm hoping mine turns out to be the ultimate amp, with trainwreck, and the 18 channel in one amp.
