Toroidal output transformers?

Post by Bluesmechanic »

While peeking around the net I landed on a site that pictured an amplifier using a toroidal output transformer. Anyone have experience with their use?

I've not experienced their use, but I understand why some builders, like Kevin use them. A toroidal transformer has less radiation than a conviential EI core transformer and less mass. I would not use them for stage builds, but I would certain recommend them for any studio equipment.

Have one in my Laney VC30. Been a reliable stage amp for over a decade.
The normal channel is a thing of beauty when cranked.

I've heard those VC30's are sweet. Wasn't aware they had a toroidal output transformer. 8O Almost bought the 2 x 12 model a while back. Ended up spending the money on a JCM800 I just had to have. :) Actually I was waffling between a VC30 or AC30. AC30=China.
VC30=England I believe. Since Gary is talking Studio gear use, they must be low noise.

IIRC, toroidal trannys have a different response to core saturation, going from unsaturated to fully saturated in a rapid manner, rather than easing into saturation as EI cores do. Not 100% sure what the effect on the sound would be, but worth bearing in mind... :?
