Best transformer source for Superlead Plexi clone

Post by 8ohms »

Well my 18 watter is almost finished and I'm already looking for a new build. The plan is for a 100 watt Plexi clone. Should be fun. I need a holygrail source for transformers, any comments on your favorites.
I'm looking for the original 67 plexi tone. I really like the Heyboer 18 watt output but not sure if they make a plexi type clone. I see mercury magnetics have a few clones as well.

Mercury Magnetics is probably the best sounding and most expensive choice. Every amp I've heard with their transformers is at the absolute top of the heap for whatever type of sound it is.

Go for the Mecury Magnetics stuff. Top notch, in my experience.

I'll second that!

MM has a few options for Plexi's and Super Leads. Talk to Paul Patronet and he'll explain them all to you.

8ohms,
I built a SLP clone and it was probably twice as much work as an 18W. I even had an original 1970 Superbass to copy. There are relatively scarce resources compared to this great site. I used a combination of several different circuit diagrams, copying the original (without disturbing it too much) and a couple of layouts which were not complete. The 6 filter caps were one of the things I had to work out and half expected a ' blow up ' at switch on. Even though it actually worked at reduced volume first time (reverse phases on OP).

Never again !! It needs an MV fitted, but after building several 36W I really don't see the need for the extra (small) amount of power that will rarely be used. If you want the diagrams, layouts, photographs etc. I hunted down, e-mail me and I'll send them to you. stevesmith350@REMOVETHIShotmail.com

Good luck :D

Holy cow, what do you want an amp that loud for??? That's a WMD. Are you playing large halls without any PA? Otherwise, a smarter idea might be to build a Plexi clone with 6V6s. As anyone whose built one of these will tell you, they're extremely loud too, but at least not to cause ear rupture when cranked, and you still get a real rich classic Plexi tone. :)

Here are some places with information on 6V6 Plexis:
