Peavey Classic 30 to 36 Watt Conversion

Post by what_wires »

Has anybody tried this before? I know that I will have to gut the PCB stuff and get a new OT.

I have one too, and i was considering the same thing. It even has a Heyboer OT ! Which by the way showed me the OT doesn't necessarily matter because the amp sounded hardly any different than with the puny stock one. But in any case, the reason i decided not to was because looking at the chassis, the pots are right above the tube sockets. so i think it would be a rather bad layout scenario for both ease of construction and noise. The chassis is not configured the way other amps like that with the controls on top are. Open it up if you haven't and see what i mean. actually, you can envision it from the outside too.

I guess you have a point. I looked inside and there isn't a whole lot of room between the controls surface and the tube mounting surface.

The package size is nice though, but I think the stock heater circuit may be a bit screwy as well. I was looking at a Classic 30 schematic and there seems to be two series networks of heater wires which is a typical Peavey trick.

Not just that, but also the wiring would have to sorta go the "long ways around" unlike the normal layout. I'm sure it could be done and work well with a lot of planning and patience, and the heater issue (which i haven't noticed) could be rectified with a dedicated small transformer i think. But the question is, is it worth the trouble to save a few bucks. besides, instead of gutting the amp you could sell it and use the money to but a 36w tranny set and chassis.

Im keeping my C30 tho because over time and a lot of gigs i long ago came to the conclusion that no matter how good an amp sounds, thats not an indication of how good it's going to sound in a live setting. And the C30 has never given me anything less than a good usable sound with no complaints consistently even in rooms with lousy acoustics. No magic, but no complaints. And i've used plenty of "killer" amps that couldn't pass that test. Then again, mine is very modded and even cathode biased. It sounds a lot better than stock.

I have a nice one in pristine condition, but I may be coming across another one which will need some work and I was toying with the idea of converting it.
