Celestion gold g10

Post by Norbert »

Has anyone tried the g10 gold in an 18 watt? I am very curious how it would sound in a 2x10...

cGil has been checking out the new ELAC 10's on a 2 x 10 18W over on the Wattkins site. Seems to like them. Might be worth reading before you decide.

The thread is here - http://www.wattkins.com/node/16451

I wonder what the efficiency of the Elac is relative to the Gold G10.

Well how about that. Elac 10s are surely the best sounding 10s I have ever heard. Probably my inspiration to build a 2x10 was an amp I heard with a pair of Elacs. I have a vintage one in an extension cab and I run my 18 through it for recording.

And it seems the price would compare favorably to the Golds. I'll have to check this out...

I am just completing the build on a new cab with 2 x 10" (Greenback 30w and a Gold 40w) new speakers. They are wired to seperate jacks so I can mix and match, depending on the head I am using. I can even run two heads through this cab now, and use an A/B box on my guitar! YAY

I also added a port on the front baffle (for a bass reflex style) which can be blocked from the rear, and a 6" removable portal on the back of the speaker box. These ports give the maximum flexibility to easily tune for stage, studio or other locations...

I will put up more pictures once the box is finished, but here is a glimpse inside, from behind:

I gave the speakers a pretty quick initial testing and was amazed at the difference in sound from each. They are in the same box so there can be no variation other than the speaker tone itself...

The particular tone from each speaker applies itself well to different pickups and music styles. Yes the classic rock greenback sound is as expected, but the surprising depth and transparency of the Gold makes a stark difference.

As you might expect, I think using both together will be likely be my usual choice. It gives that Greenback edge, with an enhanced silky touch of presence.

I still have not had a chance to play with modifying the front and rear cab ports to hear all the variations, but so far I am VERY pleased with what I hear.

Note: it probably helped a lot that I broke in each speaker with a filament transformer for 3-4 days (non-stop) to soften them up. (even with a home made iso-box the noise was pretty annoying. So I waited for a long weekend away from home... :)
