Understanding the Sewing Gauge

A sewing gauge is a small measuring tool used in sewing and dressmaking. It's typically 6 inches long and includes both inch and centimeter markings. The primary purpose of a sewing gauge is to measure and mark hem depths, seam allowances, buttonhole lengths, and other small measurements. It's an indispensable tool that ensures accuracy and precision in your sewing projects.

Benefits of Using a Sewing Gauge

Using a sewing gauge is straightforward. Simply move the sliding guide to your desired measurement, then use the guide to mark or measure your fabric.

A sewing gauge can significantly enhance your sewing experience. It allows you to maintain consistent measurements throughout your project, ensuring a professional finish. It's also incredibly versatile, making it suitable for various sewing tasks. Moreover, it's compact and easy to use, making it a must-have tool for every sewing beginner.

Identifying The Right Sewing Gauge

When shopping for a sewing gauge, it's vital to ensure that you're purchasing an authentic product.

Two Trusted Methods for Finding the Right Sewing Gauge
  1. Online reviews: reading best product reviews by real customers can provide valuable insights into the performance and reliability of different sewing gauges. Look for products with high ratings and positive customer feedback.
  2. Expert recommendations: Consult sewing experts or reputable sewing blogs for their recommended sewing gauges. They often have years of experience and can guide you towards the best products.
Key Features of a Good Sewing Gauge

Choosing the right sewing gauge involves considering several factors:
  1. Material: Opt for a sewing gauge made of durable material like metal or hard plastic that can withstand repeated use.
  2. Scale: Ensure the scale is clear and easy to read. A quality sewing gauge should have both inch and centimeter measurements. This dual marking system enables you to work with both metric and imperial measurement systems, as different sewing patterns and tutorials use different measurement systems, increasing its versatility. This feature allows you to switch between the two systems seamlessly, making your sewing process smoother and more efficient.
  3. Sliding Guide: Check that the sliding guide moves smoothly but stays in place when set to a measurement.
  4. Brand: Consider brands with good reputations for quality sewing tools.

Using an isolation transformer the wrong way is a potential death trap. If you watched "Uncle Doug"'s video and thought it was a good idea, it isn't. Some of his advice is potentially lethal.

What you need is a differential probe and good high voltage probes (depending on your amp's working voltage).

For 18W amps, good probes with 600V ratings are plenty.

For higher voltage, I have a B&K PR2000B and a Micsig DP10013 diff probe. I usually use ProbeMaster probes in general though.
