1974 Redesign 1968

Post by RyanBianchi »

I was looking for original 1974s and found this. It's apparently a redesign Marshall did in 1968 which only uses 2 ECC83s in the preamp and has a solid state rectifier. Not sure if anyone on here has seen this before but I'm curious as to how they retained two channels and a tremolo with one less valve. Looks like the input jacks go direct to the volume pots, maybe they just got rid of the input stage which would be odd.

That amp is not all original. Some of the parts/caps are new production stuff. Whether the story about it is true or not, is another question. Or if it's original at all, or a mix of old stuff + new stuff pretending to be an original. I dunno. 🤷

Other than that you can see there is an entire tube socket removed at V1, so that indicates to me that the normal channel is deleted. There might also be a big chance that the cap can is put where the EZ81 rectifier tube once sat. The turret board has been moved towards the PT by 3 inches. A strategic move that I would gave done too for lead dress’ sake.
Easy to put back to stock, but a PITA to find the right $$ parts.

The ez81 normally goes next to the cap can in others I’ve seen. The input jack wiring seems to be original, has the paint Marshall used on their solder joints. Does appear to be original in that respect.
