Tech Q on a modded Silvertone 1482

Post by Wrongdog »

First let me say I LOVE these amps and that I am a proud nut of budget amps.

Heres my question: I have a less than pleasant harmonic rasp when notes are at the ending decay of compression on a power chord at crunch levels. I added a MV. It did not do this before I added a MV.

BTW These amps use 6x4, 6au6(trem), 2 x 6v6 and I run a GE 5751 preamp tube along with the other 12ax7 PI/pre amp two channel. I added new caps, coupling caps, cathode bypass caps at the 1st stages and it rocked - especially w/ channels bridged. I added a Marshall type MV with dual ganged 1k pot and added .1 coupling cap (ie 10x ala Keven O'connor's book) along with the normal .01 coupling cap.

I doubt its tube problems but I WILL change them out to see tonite.
Also this amp is great to 6 - dirty, a bit dark but gets farty at 6-10. Are the coupling caps the problem?? Small OT??

I do not like the MV on this amp BTW. this amp is all about both pre-amp and power tube distortion. If you remove the power tube distortion you get a fairly pedestrian tone - not bad, just not great. SHould I just can the MV and use bigger coupling caps. Maybe .02s or ????
Thanks - Scott

Rasp as note decays.

Have you tried another speaker? It sounds like a voice coil rubbing to me. I have a Greenback that is doing this. As the note decays, it has this crappy raspy sound I hate. The note even seems to cut off a bit to soon, not a natural decay. Hope this helps. Bruce J.

"""It did not do this before I added a MV. """ I would be looking at the things you changes.. also measure the value cathode resistors, you may find a lose connection on something you moved or replaced, or next to where you were working. A lose connection or vibrating part can also sound like a bad speaker. Sometimes even speaker leads lose and not makeing good connection.. First try the speaker with another amp, so you can rule that out. Check the jacks for tightness too.

Thanks - all great ideas. Speaker is fine. I tried another cab. It could be something loose like a cold solder. I need to find time to go through it. Its got a new hum too thats 60 cycle.
