newbie to the list
howdie! I just came across this forum and it is pretty cool.
A bit about myself as an introduction;
My name is Roman Rist and I am primarily a solid body electric guitar builder in Los angeles. (Been building guitar for 25 years)
I have dabbled in amp building for a while and it turns out I'm an 18 watt guy as well.
I have been buddies with Mike from M& G amps for about 20 years and build all his cabinets.
Now here is the funny part, I have been building an 18 watt replica cabinet with out knowing what it was!! All this time I thought I was just building a "marshall style" cab with 2 10s, (a mini blues breaker if you will.)
at any rate the internet is a great tool for overcoming ignorance and this is a cool list!
If anyone would like to see pics of my work I would be glad to share them.
thanks for listening,
Roman

Welcome Roman, i'm sure everyone would like to see the pics of your cabs. Do you also make the 2x12? maybe list the price of your cabs..
The 18 had a 1x12. 2x12 and 2x10. And although they didn't make a head version,we have been building a head type. Lots of info here, and don't be afraid to ask questions,or add your expertice.. It seems alot of the cab builders are booked woth orders.

Richie, thanks for the welcome!
currently Iam doing 2X10 versions. Pretty accurate replicas, with the exeption of materials. I use 3/4 inch pine or polplar with dovetailed joints instead of finger joints. I have a "trick" of getting the 3/4 inch to look like the 1/2 inch plywood.
as to venting I prefer 2 vents instead of one long vent, it seems to make a stonger cabinet and makes me less nervous when picking one of these baby monsters up! from what I have seen marshall did a 2 vent model also.
how does one post pics?
thanks,
Roman

""how does one post pics? "" One of the head honchos would have to answer that, and only a few of them left that are not on vacation right now..
Some people attach them to there post too, but that is something i don't know how to do either..lol
I like the small vent cabs too, that long vent can be a pain to get the tolex to fit right, and useing 3/4 in wood, almost impossible to do. Not enough length to make it fit. i guess you could thin out theat part from the bottom it would work.
Theres quite a few here that build cabs. I like the 2x12 cabs, because they are good if you want to use them for a different type amp,or one with more power. And i don't like the 2x10 sound, over the 2x12s..also not a fan of a 1x12.. I do like 4x10s. but thats just me.. Others like them.
I've been having a cab shop close to me do my cabs, great work, but i have to cover them. So i'm going to see if i can get a guy thats not too far from me to do the whole finished cab. Take one of my cabs for him to inspect and get dimensions from. Here is a link to the cabs he does for an amp builder in Fla. http://www.tatooamps.com/cabinets.html,
I'd rather stick{no pun intended} to building amps than tolexing the cabs.

Hi Cosmicgrouvemachine,
First;- welcome to the Forum!
The changes are minor, but they do offer a good guide to dating the original amps (a similar if not identical progression of changes appears with the 45W Bluesbreakers too).
Recent threads offer various comments on this, eg see “Blockhead Firstborn Schematicâ€
First;- welcome to the Forum!
The 18W Combos were made from approx. late 1964 until mid 1967, during which time there were several styling changes. The first amps used twin vents (Vox AC-30 style). Later amps used the single long mesh vent (probably from early 1966). Other changes involved the shaping of the cab around the plexi-panel, the height of the plexi, and the style of the script on the Marshall badge. But apart from a few minor component values, I believe the circuit remained essentially the same on all 18W models (Richie may confirm that?).from what I have seen marshall did a 2 vent model also.
