"""BTW, do you know anybody who builds head cabs for a reasonable price? I think a homebrew head would be nice, anyway. """
This guy does really great work..price is also very good.

I posted this link quite a while back.. he also does the cabs for this amp place..

http://www.tatooamps.com/cabinets.html

Now keep in mind, he usually has a bunch of cabs already made up..but they will be the size of the Marshall head cabs etc.. if you use Graydons chassis..you'll have to make him build you a head cab that is a little deeper.. Graydons head chassis won't fit a standard size marshall cab.

But probably no problem for him to make you one.. he als seels some on e-bay from time to time..

Heres his name and number..
Paul Kress 1-614-679-4655..
Hes in Columbus Ohio..

I can confirm that Gradon's head chassis fits inside a 200W Marshall Major cab. With some space all round. Actually, :? lots of space... Those little valves look sort of lost in there. :)

HA...""200W Marshall Major "" well that is an exception..

thats a much bigger beast than the normal standard marshall box..:)

But i sure never thought of the major box..

I gues instead of a "pig" you have a piglett lol

Wheres the major chassis that used to live in that box?
Sounds like you a a list of equipment..

> Piglet

You spotted that, too, eh? Now remember that I'm getting this recovered in Marshall's Royal Purple levant and you get its full nickname - The Purple Piglet :)

Not sure where the chassis went. The Ebayer (in Germany) I bought the box from did offer me the trannies, but I had no need for them. The box for I can forward his email address to you if you want to see what's still available?

Actually, I do have an even more 'ginormous Marshall chassis - a '76 2003 100W Master PA. A front panel with 20+ pots, 9/10 valves and some big old trannies. That's a few projects down the line, though...

Thats an odd ball, the Master PA, you don't see those over here much.
Thats the metal case jobby.

Da PIG.. some of those supposed to have the partridge transformers in them. Like Sound city and Hiwatts..

You know this thread got us[or me] to looking even more. I thought i posted last night, but i can't find it,so i hope this is not a repete.lol

But what you were saying about the place that sent the amp to him.
So i went back to look at some of the other pics, and in the yahoo site too.

That place is making it hard to tell whats what. And the polished chassis is in some of the other pics of 18s..and every one of those has parts changed.

The thing that caught my eye was, the way the tube socket mounting bolts are in the amp. Knowing from Colin and Ians amp that they are the real thing..Colins had a speaker change and a little plate for a jack..but he told us he had done that.. and a couple minor things..

but its when people put an old chassis in a later cabnet or vise versa.. say they had a better looking cab,its easy to put the chassis in another cab.

But as Ian could probably tell ya, and we all pretty much know.
Jim was changing his amps as they went, and you can see they went from the small vents..to the long grill on later 18 and 20 watter and 10 watters..

But the one thing that seems it might tell are the way the sockets are mounted. In Ians amp{early} the mounting bolts are almost straight in line..or up and down.

In all the other pics i found 18s,20s etc,the mounting bolts are at an angle.
So somewhere they changed these along the line.

but you can see in wanntones amp that was sent..it has the early straight up and down socket mounting bolts..but his cab is long vent grill.. So it would seem to say they have put this early chassis into a later model cab..

I believe the amp they show on e-bay is also like that. Its just hard to say, because you'd have to know when they went to changing the alignment for the mounting. Jim himself might know that answer.. But going from the Known amps.. early they were straight..later they were angled..

As i was looking. i aslo found {and i believe they came from the same place} amps useing the 2 100ohm resistors..one for the screens and one for the cathode. The 10 watter shows they use those values. And all the 20s and 10s used a different value resistor on the cap can..

As you can see all the 18s had 1.5K there.. and not a 100 ohm for the cathode.

Your probably falling asleep by now..and people wonder why we are so picky on small details. You have to be to pick out if they are what they are. Just things to think about.

Hi Richie, Colin, & all,

Well Richie, it’s certainly a big help to me when you notice these little details like the valve bolts being angled or straight, so please keep reporting anything you spot. Perhaps sometimes we’ll make mistakes (well I’m likely to make far more mistakes than you, Loll!), but that’s the way we learn, and that’s the way we’ll keep one step ahead of guys like Music Ground etc.

Colin; - thanks for sending in your photos again, they provide a great reference. Shame you couldn’t take more pics before you were forced to sell. Well, maybe I’ve got more photos than you, but your Tele’s much better than mine, LoL! Any chance of more info on that Tele?

Apart from the angled valve bolts, I notice Colin’s amp uses cross-head screws to fix the chassis (as does mine), and slot-heads to attach the speakers (as does mine). Marshall probably weren’t entirely consistent about that, probably used slots in the chassis sometimes. But that’s what I was trying to say earlier;- a lot of Marshall “expertsâ€

Richie
yeah, and the early amps had a squared-off edge around the chassis cutout while the newer ones (w/ long grill) appear to have a rounded edge.

The original 18 watt schematic (Doyle p. 210) shows 100 ohms each for the cathode and screen grid resistor, and 1.5k across the cap can. Are there any other original circuit variations out there?

I would like to build a miniature box 18 watt head with the dimensions of the 20 watter´s. I guess the standard chassis wouldn´t fit, thus I would have to make my own chassis. My buddy´s ´67 head looked just too cool 8) Unfortunately, it dissapeared in a bad trade :( And, I missed to sketch the exact dimensions :(

I´m just curious where I can get a mini head cab. Maybe I should start a new thread. 8)

The stright way would be to mod my Dynacord MV15 head, though. Everything is already there. I would just have to build a fitting turret board and rewire the stuff. The amp looks way cool 8)

Getting back to the subject of the thread; - I´m still curious where to get repro pinstripe grill cloth. I bet the stuff IS repro. The stuff just stinks like new, and there´s not the slightest sign of dust ´n wear. And, the pattern of the dark/light grey stripes looks slightly different than on Ian´s pics, as well as in Doyle´s book. :P There MUST be a pinstripe source, somewhere in the universe...
