Tagboard Dimensions Please!

Hi,

anyone that can give me the dimensions of the 18 watt tagboard?
Just need length, width, thickness.

Well I know there is a tagboard layout in the downloads. But, my stupid computer just scales it to any dimensions

Not sure about the tag board but for Graydon's chassis I use a 3 1/8 " by 10 " by 1/8 " piece of G10. I have used other odd sizes and drilled different holes accordingly. YMMV

The original looks considarably narrower, though.

I got a board off ebay with almost the same dimensions (3 1/8" by 10 11/32" by 1/8") . The mounting holes are wrong and, it appears to be wider than the original as well as the one shown in the tagboard layout, too.

IÂ´ll use it for a project, anyway. But, I would like to make my own boards with the historically correct dimensions.

The original board has 2-5/8" by 10-1/8" (or if you want, 7 holes by 27 holes if you have the perforated board)....

just figured out that the tag spacing must be 3/8", and the outer tags are placed 3/16" from the edge

Well, now I got it!!!

And, I just compared the layout

The lower right screw is placed in IanÂ´s amp one hole more to the left than on the layout.
Just to share some useless information.

Ian, got to say it's so cool that you're cool on this. I have a mental picture of you running back and forward to your amp with screwdriver, ruler, calipers, camera and notebook answering all of our dumb questions, but never actually getting the chance to plug in and let rip.

I, for one, appreciate you adding such great info to the 18watt archive.

Now, don't suppose you'd take the tolex off so we can find out which direction the grain runs in on the outer layer of ply...

Ha! Well, yep, thatâ€™s more or less exactly what Iâ€™m doing,

LoL! Most of the time Iâ€™m working from home on my PC anyway, and I see the 18W stuff right away. So itâ€™s easy for me just to walk across the room and measure these things, gives me an excuse to take a break from real work,

LoL! In between Iâ€™ll relax with 5 or 6 short-ish sessions on the guitar each day, but thatâ€™s mainly just using a little Peavey practice amp.

Oh, yeah, well you can use a Lignotometer to measure that wood grain. The 1st & 6th growth rings show a Linear Stochastic Interval of almost exactly 2.26mm, surprising huh? Which of course means that the tree was cut down at 3:32pm on 4th Oct 1957 in the north field at Vangsmjosa in southern Norway by a guy called Bjorkfj.

Well, IÂ´ve calculated back and forth (which isnÂ´t that easy for a noninchy

) and found out that the assumed 3/8" spacing is within 1...2% of what you have measured. The deviation might result from manufacturing accuracy, measurement accuracy and/or shrinkage. Thus, the dimensions Gabi posted above appear right as the nominal values, IMO.

But, the thickness differs considerably. 5/32" is 25% more than 1/8"

The material looks much like the old style "Pertinax" w/o textile reinforcement (IÂ´ve found the textile-stuff in late 60Â´s / eraly 70Â´s Marshalls). Nevertheless, IÂ´ll probably use the textile reinforced stuff, since itÂ´s much less brittle.

Good point on that lower right screw... I might have stumbled across it because I have it correct in my layout.

Ian: what kind of glue was used to assemble the cab? I bet you won't be able to find that out! hehehehe

Hi Gabi,

Well I asked Jim about that glue. Matter of fact it was the first thing I asked him (actually it was the ONLY thing I asked him, I just made all the other stuff up).

Apparently, he made all the glue himself. Used to make it at the dead of night, boiling Bats Feet & Hogweed in a disused public lavatory at Northolt. Used that for all his Tolexing right up until 1972, when he sold the last 5 gallons to Seymour Duncan whoâ€™s used it ever since for potting Pups. Or so Iâ€™ve heard.

can you give a more detailed description? IÂ´ve tried to get it mixed, but it had - somehow - more of a contrary effect on the tolex

Back on the tag board:

I got my tags from RS (part no. 433-589). Man, this is the original stuff like in my Â´66 JTM!! Even the slot is there.

Just the board wasnÂ´t found in their catalog. But, IÂ´ve ordered some phenolic paper and textile reinforced stuff from a local supplyer. It should be here next week.
