Records containing 18watt playing?

Post by KlausSp »

Hi!

Are there any known records on which an 18watt is used? Any known guitar hero?

Someone please challenge me on this one, because I'd rather it weren't true: the 18W Marshall is largely sought after due to Michael Doyle's comments in "The History of Marshall".

So far, I believe this to be the case because I've never heard of anyone using one, but I've heard the Doyle quotes all over the place.

It's a wonderful coincidence that it's an amazingly kick-ass amp that not many people have had the pleasure of playing.

This has come up a few times, its hard to find info on gear used, unless its an inteview. I found some that used the 20 watter..
Robbie Mcintosh

David Grisman

""What amps did you use on Dog Years?
I used a 20-watt Marshall for most of the rhythm tracks, a Park 75 for most of the leads, and an AC-30 on a couple of things.""

And i saw ACDC use an 18 and 20 watter while doing Back in Black interview. It was on VH1, Now i don't know if they used them on the record.

Gary Mooore is supposed to own 2 of the 18s..and one on the cover of "Still got the Blues"

Probably alot we don't know of or haven't found yet.

Hi Alex, what's wrong with Doyle bringing the 18w to people's attention? I think the popularity is largely due to his influence. There are just so few originals, that hardly anyone had heard these things or knew much about them before Doyle brought it to the the public's attention. :?:

Actually there's nothing wrong with it; I'm not sure exactly what I was thinking. Perhaps maybe just that there's a lot of hype surrounding the amp based upon the book rather than having actually heard the thing, although it does deserve all the praise it gets and more.

Hate to flaunt my old age, but Lonesome Dave of Foghat used one (if any one can remember them). Guitar Player magazine interviewed him a few years ago and he was questioned about where he got his "torch" like tone on some his his intros. He mentioned that on the first few albums he used an 18 Watt almost exclusively in the studio and he specifically pointed out that it was not a 20 Watt like others suggested. However, like many others at the time, he ran his amp directly into the board so the true 18 Watt nuances are not there.

Its sad but true, most of legends of the 70's probably would never even think about playing through an 18 Watt. Besides, there are very few around and I would have to agree that it was probably Doyle that "opened the floodgates" on our little jewel.

<nerd alert>That's the style with a single long vent on the top. He's also pictured with another 18Wer on the Back to the Blues album cover, and that's type with the two small brass vents.

Did he use them? Well, he's never mentioned them in any interview I've ever read, and he even mentioned using the Pod (also in that picture) for parts of Back to the Blues. :?

Hi Guys,

Interesting question. But the 18W Combo’s were purely aimed at semi-pro musicians playing small venues like church halls or Pubs (that’s a “Barâ€

Records cotaining 18 watt playing

Lucky enough to have witnessed Peter Green using a JTM45 with John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers in 1967 (Ouch! that hurt) ....in a pub (called it a club but it was a pub).
In 1968 (where’d I leave my teeth ?) was lucky again saw Bluesbreakers with
Mick Taylor, again using a JTM45 (Marshall 4x12 + Fender 2x12).
I guess they’d use the same amps in the studio as live so that probably
puts the JTM45 on both “A Hard Roadâ€

This may not impress you much, but Eric Erlandson used a Watkins Dominator when he was recording Celebrity Skin with Hole.

I have heard from the technician who serviced most of the amps in the colour photos of the Doyle book that Orbison did indeed record most of the original "Pretty Woman" album with an 18W. Take it for what it is worth at this point - third hand information!

Also, heard something about Angus Young in an interview reffering to a 18 watt (he apparently had one as a back drop in his interview scene).

And also heard about Stone Temple Pilots used an 18 on the "Highway Love Song."

That's about all I know...

Although this may not count as a "real" vintage 18.. but i got to talk with a friend of mine who was working in an LA studio. Its been a long while since i last talked to him..and had a lot of catching up to do. I built him a green covered 2x12,quite a while back. And he told me alot of different people had played the amp out there. I hope i can remember all the fatcs..of who just played it,and what recodings he used it on for guitar tracks.

I know he was on tour with Dave Davies, and he said he played the amp.
i can't remember if this guy played through it,or was used for recording..but another was Waddy Watchel..
I know he said it was used on Sue Medley album, but i don't think its released yet.. or it might have been on the last one.. I did find this..
{2003, "Ordinary Girl" (with Mick Fleetwood on drums/percussion}
http://www.emusic.com/cd/10598/10598040.html

Another was Nicky Smart.. which i couldn't find any info on..

My friend is supposed to be here from Alabama Sunday to pick up and drop off some amps..so hopefully i can find out more info.. Or straighten out the info i posted..lol One of those calls, i got too many names and not enough memory...LOL He did say they all loved how it sounded..

Yes. Here's a page with that ad on it (scroll down a bit):

Hmm...there doesn't seem to be any option to edit a post.

Tht picture does not actually feature the 18 - just Matrshall. Maybe there was another ad?

I've mentioned this before, but I'm sure I read the Stone Temple Pilots used a real 18 on the Highway Love Song. There's a swell in there that sounds like an 18. I had also read that one of the guys had purchased an original and had really enjoyed using it in the studio.

If you've got the CD, give it a listen and let us know what you think.
