original 'wide' 18 watt 2x12

Post by Tony »

Hi,

This weekend at a Dutch guitar show I saw an original 18 watt with a 2 x 12" setup. I immediately noticed it because it had a much wider cabinet, about 20" high while being about 30" (!) wide. It had the small metal vents (2 of them) and yellowish/gray pinstripe grill and two greenbacks. The seller insisted that it was an original 18 watt and asked 3500 euro (about $3800). I didn't bring my camera unfortunately :x .
I didn't know these existed..

Tony,

Yeah, I saw it, too. They had their stand next to me :)
I´m not sure if it was 100% legit. But, it had the first series cab like Ian´s amp, but with greenbacks. The chassis date was 2/67, but the chassis sticker may have been added later. The amp was in average condition with a number of tears and replaced parts. Their asking price was Euro 5.000 (some $ 5.700) and, afaik, it went in a partial trade for around that amount. I guess you may have heard the amount that was discussed in addition to the traded item.

Btw, the amp sounds awsome (just played at low volume). I discussed it with the lucky buyer, and we had the back panel removed ´n took some photos.

Never really knew why Marshall went to the hassle and expense of doing so many versions of the 2x12 cab. My '71 Artiste is yet another size at 28x23x9in.
