EZ81/6CA4 rectifier tube

Post by ratafcuk »

Hi all,

I'm building my 18watt amp, and I gotta a question about this tube. Can anyone tell me if there's any equivalent tube for this model?

Thanks

Ted Weber (www.webervst.com) makes a solid state replacement, looks like a little copper tube, for about $15.

The EZ81 is also known as the 6CA4. It is a 9-pin rectifier tube. Be careful not to get an EZ-80 as that will not provide enough current.

The Weber WZ-81 copper cap is a great alternative if you don't want to mess with NOS or used rectifier tubes. I use Copper caps in my amps interchangeably. They feel just like EZ81s.

There are also some other equivalents, see http://tdsl.duncanamps.com/show.php?des=EZ81 and also http://www.r-type.org/exhib/aaa0523.htm

Though given what Graydon says, I may switch to a WZ81 and let the PT run a bit cooler in my WEM conversion. Never tried a copper cap...

I opened up the hole for an octal socket and used a GZ34, then a Weber WZ34.

EZ81s seem to be freely available here in the UK, I have just ordered some from Chelmer Valve Company, but Watford Valves and several other suppliers stock them too. Cost was £7.00.

This thread brings up a bunch of questions for me!!

My 18 watt lite PT has always run fairly warm/hot and I use the EZ80/6V4. I stuck with the EZ80 since thats what the Grommes donator amp used. Is that why I run hot?? Am I over working the rectifier tube?? Since the tranny sees max .6 amp with the EZ80 won't it be freaking hot with EZ81 at max 1.5 amp draw? Correct me if I am wrong on the amp draw BTW. Are we approaching that kind of draw with these things on 6-7??

I like the sag I am getting tonally but I am sure I'd pickup some punch and head room with the SS or EZ81 rectifier.

Can I safely sub the EZ 81? Should I bother?

Interesting.

When I started making chassis, the idea of a "universal" chassis always comes to mind.

The idea is to have holes drilled big enough to fix custom made blanking metal pieces with holes for either 2A3 type, 211 type, octal, and preamp, and also 7 pin.

I'm sure someone has already made this, but not sure for production. Would be great for experimentation, though.

Thanks!

Thanks all, I've checked all the links and references, but finally I could find a store where I can get this tube. Thanks anyway.
