36-watt build started

Just started on my 36-watt build. I picked up the chassis from ceriatone and a board from turretboards.com... i've been reading the articles on people voicing their normal channels tone control like a 5E3 Deluxe. Is this the preferential way of wiring it? I have it wired like a standard tone control right now, but was thinking about modifying it over... anyone have any sound samples for this modification? Also, i got a quote from Heyboer on the trannies and it looks like its going to run around $200. Anyone know where i might find a better deal on these trannies? Just trying to be a little thrifty right now...

i actually have a 36w head w/hayboer trannies. i had it built exactly like an 18 except w/ bigger trannies and 4 EL84. the normal side shares the same master volume control and of course is gz34 rectified. this is actually the most versitile amp i have ever played. i A/B'd it w/ a 69 super tremolo and in my opinion the 36 blew it away, tone, response everything

There are alot of things you can do to voice the amp in a way you might like it. As for the normal channel..you can use the modded 5E3 version. Or the trem vol/tone,which is what is in the Trex amp in the sound files.
Or You can use the normal 18 type channel. I have been trying to fix the problems in the layout drawing..or the mistakes that are there. But i'm not having much luck,everytime i try to edit and redraw things,some things get erased as i drag across parts of it. So my drawing is just not happening right now. So you have to watch out for those mistakes in the layouts,that are out there.. I was trying to change the drawing of the inputs,and the heyboer transformer hookups.

As for the trannys. I know it may seem a bit high,but for a complete set of 35 watt OT,and a nice well built PT and the choke..200.00 is a really good price. Well built,and hefty,and sound great,and also fit the chassis Nik has. If i were to be thrifty,i would try to do it on maybe other parts,and not skimp on the trannys,since these are the heart of the amp.

Yeah i agree, these amps are overlooked,they are great amps.Not too many have built one of these amps.

I have 36W tranny sets for less than $200. Check out my site for details. I am waiting on some OTs to arrive, but as soon as they arrive, I can ship complete sets. I do not use a choke. I built my 36W using a resistor on the cap can just like the 18W.

I see your point on the trannies being the heart and soul of the amp. I'm going to have to start saving pennies i guess to get these trannies. I may opt not to go with the choke and as Graydon said, put a resistor across the cap as in the 18watt. I may end up selling off my S2 18 watt tranny set to help fund this adventure.

Has anyone looked at Nik's layout? I'll post it there. I plan on building one once I get my chassis from Nik. Graydon...I'll probably be looking for that tranny deal you mentioned

Yes that drawing needs a few corrections. And a few things added and changed. The Heyboer tranny set,fits Niks chassis.
I'll try to see if Nik has time to make the changes.

Since you mentioned it, the band has posted a couple more new tunes off the CD,which will soon be out Aug 16.

The Cheaters and Non believers tune,has a nice thick lead break about 2:40 into the track. Much different than the first lead break of the song.
I think this was a tele on some of it. The song Don't jump the gun,has some things done to the recording for some effect on the guitar sound. I know I like it much better when i hear them play it live.

I went with them on a recent gig,and they opened for another band. The other band was useing a Divided By 13 amp,which all i know was it was a head and cab.
I thought it would be good to hear that amp,since everyone talks about them. But i just didn't get it. Buds tone was much better. Their were others there that thought the same thing. You can click the link and listen to the new clips added.

I built the Ceriatone kit / Nik layout this spring. Check Chris Wu's diagram to sort the power transformer. Also, the input jacks are incorrect, there's a photo of how to do them right in the gallery. And the switches are upside down and reversed. The 36W tmb is fantastic, good luck with the build.

Finished up the main wiring this weekend. I decided to go with the resistor across the cap instead of the choke. I think i did this more for aesthetic reasons than anything else, but it will save me 25 bucks so i can dig that. Ordering the trannies this week and a smallbox head cab this week as well. This is probably the cleanest build i've done to date. I'm really starting to like the teflon-coated silver stranded wire that i'm using. it really stays where you put it.

Is there a list of the corrections, additions, and changes anywhere? I'm trying to build off this layout and hope to avoid any mistakes.

I also have the following questions.

1) What voltage specs are required for the 0.1uF cap connected to pin 7 of V3? Will 250 volts work OK? I'm referring to the 0.1uF cap to the right of the 16uF 450V cap in the center of the board.

2) Which position of the feedback switch turns feedback ON? (I know this is a really stupid question, but being stupid myself I can't make since out of it.)

3) Is 1/2 watt OK for all resistors that do not indicate a wattage? This seems OK to me for most of the pre-amp resistors. Are there any where I should use 1 watt?
