Noisy when input plugged in

Post by stevesuk »

I have rerouted and tied up all the ac wiring on the 18watt lite I have just built to reduce the mains hum, that worked.
Now when I plug the guitar in it is very hummy.
I notice on Mark's Lite Mark 111 he has a 68K resistor in series with the input jack, what is this for ? I am going to try it tomorrow, but I have run out of the life blood SOLDER :?

That 68k is to kill radio frequency interference coming in. If you're suffering a buzz, rather than hum, that resistor may help. Otherwise your answer lies elsewhere.......

Thanks for the tip, It's Sunday morning and I haven't got one inch of solder left, so I'll move the amp to another room away from the computer, stereo etc. see if that works. If the 68K resistor doesn't work i'll use some screened cable for the input which I have never ever found necessary before on 7 amp builds. This test bed amp I have built, where I don't care what it looks like and i am not worried about butchering it looks like a good idea.
It's the size of a shoe box longways, and it is loud !! I am going to build it a little cabinet, with Ma.....ll type vinyl and trim. Perhaps I'll do that today as i don't fancy paying DIY store prices for 2 feet of solder in a tube.

"""so I'll move the amp to another room away from the computer"""

Seems you already know this, but maybe for those that don't..You can't sit in front of your pooter with a guitar,it will cause hum noises..
And some stereos will also cause it...
