AC30 Project

Post by KlausSp »

Hi!

At the moment I´m collecting parts for my 18Watt lite. But I´m already lokking for the next amp to build :) I´m thinking about building a Vox AC30. Are there projects like www.18watt.com, but for Vox amplifiers?

Greetings,

Klaus

Hi Klaus,

I dunno. But, a non TB AC30 is VERY similar to our beloved 18 watt pony. :)
I could post a layout that I had taken from my ´63 AC30 when I restored the chassis.

Hi Adrian!

Your layout would be highly appreciated! I´m the owner of a '93 reissue, but it´s build on pcb, so it´s not really useful for a layout.

Thank you!

Guten Tag Herren . . .

I believe Nik at Ceriatone makes a PTP AC30 Board with the components of your choice. His work is excellent and he's a very reliable business man. I highly recommend him.

He is "ampkits" on the site. Look him up in the "Members List" section.

Danke Schön!

Hi Klaus und Dan!

hope it works.
The TB layout isn´t much different, as most of the handfull of parts are hung up in the air. :)
Feel free to ask any questions. I do have a TB, too.

Viel Spass mit dem AC30!

""" I´m the owner of a '93 reissue,"""

I've had a few of these amps in for repairs, and would like to pass on to you to check the screen resistors.. All of the ones i've had here, have had one of those that have come loose from the board at one end..
And the last one has a bad transformer vibration..
The RI sound pretty good, but suree don't use the trannys and parts like the old ones did. Hate those PC boards..

Hate those PC boards..
I don´t like them either. That´s why I´m thinking about building my own :)

Wannatone, just some notes/comments:

You must surely have a TB with the "add-on" board that is on the back of the amp. The "true" TB with tone controls on the top control panel has the additional tube as number six, closest to the power xformer, and most of its components added on the (somewhat longer) top board, closest to the power xformer. Don´t remember right off the bat if the bottom board is also a bit longer, the cathode components from the TB should go there...need to check my photos for that.

Besides, what version is your AC30 - Bass, Normal or Treble? Personally, I think it´s either a Normal or a Bass version, since I believe the Treble version has extra bright caps mounted directly on the volume pots, plus different values for coupling caps to and from the PI. To me, the Normal version actually sounds best (even better than the TB), but then, that´s me :D

The differences might be somewhat important to builders.

Finally, on your layout, I can´t seem to find the wires that go thru the chassis from the PI coupling caps to the power amp, (far right of the bottom board, right from the lower end of the fat 0,15 uF caps, from bottom edge of board thru rubber grommet)? Guess it´s just an oversight.

Great job in any case - thanks for putting time into it!

Cheers /Richard

One more thing: I have shedloads of big and detailed pics (mostly the boards) taken from different AC30:s that have passed my bench in the last year. If anyone needs them, I´ll upload them to one of my boxes. Just let me know. I have pics of all versions, I think, except the TB add-on version, and all of them are 60:s amps.

VOX pics uploaded - warning, LOTS of HUGE pics!

Post by Ballz »

I am currently uploading the stuff to my box via 56kB modem :-)...

So, once finished, there we are:

http://www.it.mah.se/amps/vox/voxpics.htm

Enjoy! Kindly note that this page is NOT for modem users, the page is chock full of hi-res 2048 pixel wide pics, straight off the camera.

Hope it helps someone.
:D

Richard,

Thanks for the great pics!

I´ll post an updated layout.

It´s a non TB model that has a prepared TB opening in the back panel under the name plate. It´s actually an original red anp that had been painted black.

Could you tell me the differences between bass, normal and treble models?

Btw, note the odd 2 Meg pots.

I have an early grey panel AC30 with the TB integrated in the control panel, too. Could check for details... just allow some time.
