A friend of mine is heading off to Czechlovakia in a week. Winds up he has friends who worked at the tesla plant, and lives not too far from there.
What tubes should I ask him to be on the look out for over there for my 18watter?

The original Tesla EL84s are great tubes. I also like the Tesla ECC83s. The JJ EL84s are also very nice. JJ is owned by one of the former partners in Tesla. Tesla decided to stop making tubes so he bought that part of the business to start JJ. Some people don't like the JJ tubes as much, but I think they are pretty decent sounding tubes.

I couldn't agree more. I just put a set of NOS Tesla(not JJ) EL84's from Sarge in my 18 Watt Lite lla and they're great sounding tubes. They have a very smooth distortion that's real musical, it's the tube I've been looking for. I intend to try the NOS Tesla ECC83's also. If you have any Marshalls that use EL34's, the Tesla EL34 could probably be considered the Marshall sound of the 70's. It is the tube that was used by Marshall to replace the Mullards in their amps and is known to be a great sounding tube.The original Tesla EL84s are great tubes. I also like the Tesla ECC83s.

Whatever price he can find them for. They will work out way cheaper than anything you will see over in the west! The Czech crown's value is pretty low.
BTW there isn't any country called Czechoslovakia any more. There's Slovakia and there's the Czech Republic - both separate countries. Prague is possibly the most picturesque city in the world.
