Okay let's break it down in order. I live in a tiny apartment, so in the 'living room' is out of the question, I use a 1.5 watter there or nothing at all. Most hours are in an also small rehearsal space, which is why I like the 18 it's perfect. 36 is good when we're out. "Not rich" (I feel your pain I work at a research university), the 18's cost less be it the ironsounds kit or a DIY conversion if you don't require huge headroom/ higher stage volume. 36 if you do, then attenuate when you need to. Since you can't make a bad choice here, the real problem is.....indecision.

I don't think you' have any problems with an 18 tmb...they're louder than you might think...too loud to crank in an apartment and perfect for most club situations. The 36, you'll probably get a louder clean before getting to the distorted tones...I've been told this is close in loudness to a 50 watt marshall....it's very loud. Bud, the lead guitarist from American Minor, plays a 36 watter that Richie built and last I talked to him, he mentioned Richie's building him an 18 voiced the same way as the 36 is just too loud for the average club. He said he had to have the vol on something like 1-2, iirc. Same with his 50 watt Marshall. It's handy for outdoor festival type gigs, though. In the end, you have to decide for yourself what your needs are...either amp will work in a club. If you want the potential or have gigs where you need more power, go for the 36. If not, then the 18 will suit you fine. You can voice it how you like...this is why it's hard to compare the amps...a lot of the basic circuits are the same but people voice things differently for slightly altered tones.

Yeah, Tokai, Greco, Oroville, Burny, Ibanez. They all made very quality instruments back in the late 70s and early 80s. greco became fender japan (in a way) and I'm sure you know the stories of the Fender Japan guitars exceeding quality of the american made fenders. In fact, I think it was Tokai or Greco to first start building exact to spec replicas of the vintage 50's and 60's guitars, before Fender or Gibson ever got to that.

I have a Greco SE700 strat and it plays great, sounds great, and its from 79, no telling its not a late 60s strat.

I also own an Ibanez Artist 250 (AR250). If you like Pauls with a little more balls, then you ought to scope those out. When I get my amp, I'll record a little something on it. It has sustain for weeks, I'm not joking.

When I look at guitars, I dont look at gibson and fenders, I look at Greco's and vintage Ibanez, or Tokai. Yamaha's from the 70s are killer also, thats what santana played (SG2000). SRV played a tokai before endorsement from fender i believe.

Hi,

The problem has been solved. Wanted to post the updated layout, but file's on another machine. Posted DC30 layout instead under BBQ.

As for this:

1. The cathode resistor values are not to blame.
The mistake in having choke/1k5 resistor on the can cap means that screen resistors need to be raised.
The effective resistance when choke/res paralleled is less than 100 ohms, as the choke is not the type with hi resistance (it's a plexi choke).

But the tone was real nice. When finding remedy, I wanted to get the tone Shane's amp was getting.

Simple enough, we just raise the screen resistors - 100 ohms to 1k5. There are 2 on the board, both are changed.

There might be some benefit of playing with the value to adjust to taste.

2. Cathode resistors are now changed to effectively 130/10W per side of the 1/2 power switch. We use 130/5W in parallel cause we have lots of these.

That's pretty crazy of Nik hey? Some builders gob epoxy on boards to hide their "secrets".
I know that the 36 isnt Niks design or anything but this build definately is. Everything from the choke (only lol) to the half power to the bias and cap values and more make it unique and tuned to his ear which, thankfully and luckily is evidently EXACTLY like mine. Good thing he has no shareholders. He was selling them cheap...now he's GIVING them away! That is SO exactly the amp!
If I had a bag full of all the parts and that layout, even I could build that thing just from that layout.
Is that how they come in other kits? I mean I've seen this particular layout before but never any others. Are they all like this?
I hear that the Weber kits dont come with ANY instruction. Why wouldnt all kits come with a layout like this?
I wanna build an amp now. Which other kits have a layout like that Nik? None? Damn...I guess I shoulda had you build me a 6v6 jtm tw and I coulda just waited for the 18/36 kit with layout to come out! lmao
Do I have to get you to make me the funky jtm for us to have a layout of it? You know, seriously though, maybe we SHOULD talk about making me a new 6V6jtm with some Dumble stuff ...or would that just be TOO MUCH? Everything about that just screams L-O-L-A (the one with the dark brown voice...that walk like a woman but talk like a man...that nearly broke my spine). Might just turn into a puddle of melted chocolate?

Weber kits do have all of their layouts and schematics on their site. But I agree, Nik's service is great.

Blaren, everyone selling kits includes at least schematics and layouts. Niks layout isn't anything special, you can even download several from this forum that are just like his. What is special is his version of Richie's design. And his great service is well known.

But ya know...This stupid 36watter...even when it still isnt well yet, has gone and gotten rid of my amp GAS. I wouldnt even know what to build. I have a tweed '57 Gibson GA-9 on 2-6V6s that I hear is essentially a champ preamp with a deluxe power section?. I have my old Harmony H415, a 2-12, 2-EL84 that has absolutely NO headroom and just ABSOLUTELY RIPS, I have a '70SF twin clean machine, and various 50 and 100W marshalls. This 18/36 fills the hole in between AND does a good impression of all my other amps. What would I make? A one and a half watter just for the bedroom? My gibby and Harmony are good bedroom amps already.
I didnt have to play last night and there was a band in town..."Krome". they're pretty heavy...Kinda Nickleback(ish).
I hear "decent" things about Marshall DSLs at the marshall forums. Heard a couple of drop D heavy bands use them before and while I dont really like that kind of music,...they definately KICK. They have the unmistakeable marshall KRUNCH for sure.
Dude last night, in a bar where I usually play...pretty small, I sure cant get away with using a 50W 4-holer in there...sounded GREAT through one of them DSLs.
Seems like a pretty versatile amp. The only bad things I've heard about them is...they're a hunk of junk and some of them fall to pieces. lol..how bad could THAT be?
Nevermind...now that I think about it...I need one of those like I need another hole in the head.....no pun intended.
I still have to get this 36 up to snuff and then get my '73 healthy too.
Yeah...I got stuff to do. Just waiting for parts.

Yeah...so what is the current status of yoour 36 watter? It seems like all of the design issues got worked out, so I guess you're pretty close to having yours up and running at 100%?
