Stop ordering the sockets with the shields

Post by bnwitt »

Wayne,
if you're a pack rat you'll keep em and if you aren't you'll toss them. You can order the sockets without the shields for now and use the ones you have on the preamp tubes until they're gone.

ya im a pack rat but between surf boards, mtbs and guitars while living in a studio on the beach im at a loss for space. i get those cheap angela sockets 10 for 8 bucks so i dont bother reusing the sockets and just get new ones. seems like a waste just to pitch'm.

wind chimes?

Post by bnwitt »

Wayne,
ok, how about making wind chimes out of them and selling them in Laguna beach. You could use all the short wires cut off during the chassis wiring phase to interconnect them and call them "Tube Tune Chimes". It will be weeks before the yuppies realize they're not really musical.

Aluminum or steel? I get amps ALL the time with the shields missing.

Theres some kind of info about shields,i'll have to find it,but some tubes are supposed to work better with out them. But then again they also help sometimes. I always need those things. Maybe thats where all the missing shields end up,at your place..lol

ya ive been told they help draw heat of the preamps and prevent microphonics so i use them occaionally, thing is ive built about 10 amps but have only kept 1, the 18w trem richie style. dud if you want them you can havem

about my spelling/punctuation

sorry, dont mean to offend anyone by not capitalizing names, calling people dud like i did richie, but my poor laptop keyboard has a bunch of wire ends and solder drops stuck inside. typing at speed results in bad grammar and incoherant mumbling.

sorry

Hmmm, I've heard they can make microphonics worse. So I don't use them if possible. Sometimes you need them to shield preamp tubes in hi-gain amps. That's about it.

Gerald Weber says toss them as the amp sounds better without them. He doesn't say why.

They do increase the overall capacitance to ground seen by the grid. Not enough to effect the sound of a guitar amp. Maybe there is something else...

I've never noticed any lowering of noise by using them.

They do stop you having to collect all the tubes from the bottom of the amp after a bumpy drive to a gig / reherasal though!

"""about my spelling/punctuation

Hey i've been called lots worse..lol Yesh my keys don't stick, but sometimes i just don't take the time to proof read, and i miss a key or two,and it ends up sounding like something goofy..lolSometimes one letter can make a word alot different meaning..lol

As for helping microphonics. All i can say is,i know in some amps they help. But some high gain amps are designed not to use shields, like Carvin,
One of these had a whistle sound and when you moved your finger close to the preamp tube it would stop. Crazy stuff .
