cleanroom?

Post by davemw »

is there much difference in clean room from a 18watt to a 36watt or is it just that much more loud distortion?

General consensus is that you'll get more headroom and bass response. I've never had a 36, but that sounds about right. I can tell you from experience that you can get similar results from a bigger/better/more efficient cab. Either route can/will effect your tone to some extent, but are options.

So many amps, so little money.

One thing a 36 will give you over the 18 watt (or any 4 output tube amp over any 2 output tube amp) is a much punchier low end. This is as true of a Plexi 100 over a 50. Of course and headroom.

clean = fender 6L6 based combo
Not Clean = 18 watt

Play an 18watt at club volumes and it will grind. If you want clean build a fender. I did and I like it a whole bunch. If I want Marshall mojo I A/B over to the 18watt (or 36).

A lot of folks don't realize that Marshall cleans generally have more liquid shimmer than Fenders. A TMB 36W would give you plenty of each.

EBE, which Fender did you clone ?
I am looking for that "blackface clean" for a futur project.
Already have a 6L6 Bogen to convert and some nice NOS Tungsol 5881.

My idea would be to use both 18W and 5E3 for grind and ABYing a "40W" blackface for clean. Loud enought ?

IIRC Stevie Ray Vaughan did the opposite. He used modded BF Fenders for his distortion sounds and Marshalls for the clean tones. Like I said, you can't beat the shimmering cleans of a Marshall.

Hi Phil,

I agree with you about Marshall amps having great clean tone but....
What I have/will have on hand are:

1* 18 watt TMB
1* Dynacord 18 watt liteIIb (ordered the parts last week !!!)
1*5E3 (great clean too, but at low volume)

In front of a drummer, hard to get great clean with those beasts.
And this Bogen waiting to become a more powerfull/headroomy BF.
So...

BTW, did you see that Dynacord on ebay.de ?

A stupid question: what means IIRC ?

I agree with you, but I just mentioned SRV out of interest. It's true that neither the 18W nor 5E3 would have much clean headroom, although you can mod 5E3s to clean them up - even put the 5881s in the power stage.

Actually with those 5881s, I would really recommend you try building a 5F6A Bassman.

IIRC = if I recall correctly

I answered your e-mail about the Dynacord a few minutes ago. I think he wants cash on collection, which would be a little difficult for me, without flying to Germany...

IMHO, the all-time cleanest guitar amps I've ever used are/were the 100 watt Ampegs like the V4. My favorite (to my ears) is the blackface Fender SuperReverb. A/B between that for clean and an 18 OR 36 for lead/grind and you're in tone heaven at anything up to way beyond leasebreaking SPL.
(but you've gotta feed yer girlfriend/roadie steroids to lug 'em around for you!)

that's exactly what I do: 18wTMB and/or 5e3 for grind and a Fender Bandmaster Reverb for clean. Sounds great.

My next project will be based on the Fender Vibro King which is kinda like a standalone Fender reverb unit coupled to a simplified tweed bassman.

Modding my 5e3 for clean ???
Bouuhhhh no way !!!!!!!
It would defeat the purpose of having a 5E3. (IIRC someone told me "distortion is the tone")

I thought some times ago about doing a Bassman with the Bogen, as I really love that sound also, but I guess that it will be one more "crunchy" amp....

How about a 5F6a power amp with a AB763 preamp ?

I built a AB763 with bias vary trem instead. Deluxe reverb sized but I used trannies from allen amps so I run 6L6s. Plenty loud for medium sized clubs.

No, actually it will be very similar to a BF in that respect - ie warm Fendery clean, until pushed very hard. This is mainly due to two things - the 12AY7 in the preamp and the 5881 power valves. Even it's higher gain brother, the JTM45 (with 12AX7 and KT66s), stays clean until it's very loud!

Yeah OK, guys. I try to help someone and you just make fun of me! :) Yes, clean is OK sometimes. But the distortion zone is where all the real action is!

So,so,so......

What I am waiting for ?
I have got everything on hand, even 4 60's Japanese 10" speaker with huge alnico magnets...........

Time to drill a 5f6a board. Any advantage to add a bias trim pot ?

Orange drop or sozo ?

Do you think it could reach some Gilmore/Knopfler clean strat sound ?

The 5f6a will Knofler very well. 4 tens @ 2 ohms in a pine box really adds up for a complex tone. Definately add a bias pot. I might even make el34s an option. If you want loud & real clean from a Marshall its got to be a 50 or 100 watter. The 18 watt has beautiful clean only if you are in your living room. At most club volumes you have to push it harder than that.

Hi Buschman,

My 10" are 8 Ohms each, so I will end up with 8 Ohms total, with an OT going for 4/8/16 Ohms.

As this 2 Ohms load something to see with the Bassman sound ?
