I also ordered sarges Russian EL84 and one Bell 5751.......but I managed to get a Bell . I completely agree on the low end rjgtr. It sounds absolutely fantastic for clean combined with that 5751, but I may end up adding some sort of switch to accomadate the low end when it is cranked. So far it has been a really cool experience, although I can plainly say that I prefer them over JJ's.

Hmmm, the Sarge's webs site says that his Brimar 12AX7s are the same as his Bel ECC83s, which are the same(ish?) as Mullards. I have a couple of Brimars like the ones in his picture and they have a very bright, brash and in your face kind of tone. Mullards are generally mellower in my experience. This isn't a criticism, just an observation....

If you play mostly clean, especially jazz, you'll like the smooth character of these tubes.

In that case they should be playing a different kind of amp - maybe a F*nder. Marshall 18Ws are about distortion, crunch and grind!

I think the 18 has a good jazz tone when turned down. You don't HAVE to dime it!

It's funny how the Deluxe reverb is sort of the tube jazz amp. I always thought the Gibson amps has a cool vibe for a very 50s jazz tone.

sorry for the bait and switch send back any that are not matched or disatisfied with and the sgt will make good on em.i am more interested in your safisfaction then the size of the wallet i have! tone means more to me then bean countin the bells sucked i wont send that kind of thing .so send back what aint workin and i will square you away this goes for every mothers son of you .none of my division will suffer over crummy not up to snuff bulbs.or my uncle will get pissed and short cirucit

I'm not dissatisfied with either set of tubes. Although I wasn't really looking for the Westinghouse tubes, they are perfect for a couple (gulp) of my Fender amps. The price was more than good and there's no reason I shouldn't keep them.

On the EB's I think the two pairs are close enough to use (which was my intention for the quad - to split them into two pairs). They make me want to build a Matchless clone (will this amp building ever stop!). I also think the EBs would be perfect in a DSL-201 or 401. I used to own a 401 for small gigs, but with the 20 watt who needs one of them anymore. I certainly like the overall character of the EBs more than some NOS GE tubes I had. They had zero low end and harsh highs. The EBs are SMOOOTH.

Don't take my review as being unhappy. Both sets of tubes are fine.

Now if you DO have anything NOS in an ECC83 with a British (Mullard), I would be interested at the right price!

Hey I'm not saying you SHOULD play jazz through an 18 watt. Just that you can! Of course, even a jazzer girlie men will want to crank it too!

Which leads to a funny story. I got the Charlie Christian box set. He's the guy who made electric lead guitar happen with Benny Goodman. On it is a rehearsal. Benny stops the band and says "that **** guitar is too loud!". Imagine that a 5 or 10 watt amp in a big band is too loud . But it gets even better - what does Charlie say? "Man I need it set there to get my sound."

Just proves the more things change the more they stay the same.
