I'm going for a PLEK setup for the greater good of the 18watt community and curiosity. The guy who does it is a well known 'name' of the 70s, better not mention his name. But, a quiz for you all. What we call a pub quiz in good old England.(sad bas***ds)
'What well known English band of the 70s flew a plane load of journalists from the UK to the Fillmore and turned the whole thing into a fiasco due to ' substances ' and other influences' ?
Answers on a postcard (but don't post them ) anyway there's a post strike in UK.
I've heard he is a good amp builder and luthier and is also shortly to launch his own range of valve amps, although to an old hippy ' shortly ' could be in this life or the next, possibly, if he can be arsed, and wakes up in time.
Seriously they were evidently the best english ' pub band ' of the 70s that didn't quite make it big. The Fillmore Fiasco saw to that. Its a good story if you can find it. In fact they are more famous for that than anything else.
Steve, I to have shared your dissapointing LP experience, but there is hope. I always wanted a LP and finally in 2000 I brought home a Wine Red LP Standard. The guitar was beautiful looking but that was it. Over time I stopped playing it and it stayed in its case because the tone was crap. The tone was muddy and dark and just no good. I eventualy sold it at a big loss.
Three yaers later I get the urge to try again, this time I got a Wine Red Studio Plus w/Figured Maple top. Again the guitar was beautiful but the tone was crap.

But instead of selling again I did a little research and found that Gibson uses 300k volume pots in all their guitars from the Standard down. They use 500k Volume pots in all Customs, Historic and high end guitars. The 300k pots kill the highs and is the reason for the muddines. Gibson actually engineers flaws into there lo-end instruments to make the expensive ones sound better. My original volume pots actually measured 248k @ neck and 319k at the bridge. So this shows there QA program is in the "bog". After this change I new there was hope for the guitar. I purchased a set of Lindy Frailin PAF`s and the guitar went to the next level , it became a super guitar and I quickly fell in love with it. I did not stop there though. I purchased a light weight stop tail piece from All Parts. This tail piece is lighter than the original thus it has less dampening affect on the strings , sending more vibrative energy into the body. This gave the guitar a more open and airy sound, better mids and highs. I am very satisfied with the guitar but I still the the Gibson Corporation has ther head up there arses. I get many compliments on my tone but I`m quick to point out the changes I made to make it sound decent. I give my LP a 10 but I give Gibson a 3. I wish you look with your guitar. One more thing I swapped in good caps in place of the ceramic discs. I heard a slight improvement in tone with this but nothing drastic. But just knowing there in there makes me like it that much better. I used polyester orange drops.
