6V6 audio comparison

I set the JJ's at 20mA and then throw in the EH's, they'll be at 35mA!

I've had exactly the same experience with EH EL84s - they bias *way* hotter in my experience. If the amp is already right on 100% things can get cooked very quickly (as my brother found out the hard way with a Cornford Hurricane recently)

Having said that, I've been using EH 6v6s in another amp for ages, and they seem to bias fine although I've not tried JJs yet for comparison

Great comparison! Thanks for taking the time to post this experiment. I've only taken the time to try 2 brands in my Express build...JJ and EH. I like the JJ's better, but they bias much colder than the EH. It may just be my particular tubes, but if I set the JJ's at 20mA and then throw in the EH's, they'll be at 35mA!

the jj's are more like a 7591 bias wise, than a 6V6. i suspect they took a 7591, and stuck a 6v6 heater and cathode inside. i have run mine at 40watts no problem.

What amp did you use for the cranked clips? I was hoping you'd use the 5E3 as it really shines when cranked.

I love it -- single blind testing is the next best thing to double-blind.

They're Sino brand tubes.

It's a 5E3 output with a standard Fender style bass/treble tone stack.

I used to own a '54 Deluxe. The ones I've built have a similar character, but are less mushy, which I like. The original only sounded good with a strat.

I like the way the volume control after 3-5 becomes more or less a gain knob. From funky blues distortion to lunacy.... Pretty handy, roll the guitar volume down and to solo, dial in the grit you want. Truly one of my favorite Fender amps.

Yea, that's what I used to do with my old one. I bought it in '90 when not many people knew what it was. Our drummers first reaction was "What's that? It looks like a '50s sewing machine". It was also missing it's Fender badge, so no clue there either. I used to just use that with a bit of analogue delay. I'd see guys at gigs checking out my pedal board between sets. The only things connected were the delay a wah and the tuner. I'm sure they thought that if I sounded good now, I would have sounded great with a rack!!

I gig with mine regularly, and no one knows what the heck it is as it is in a custom mahogany cab.

I have had a few dudes from other bands come up asking what it is and what pedals I'm using. Guitar > cable > amp is all I need. You should see their faces when I unleash the MUTANT18
