Rectifier?
What the accepted rectifier for this setup? GZ34?
Would it be possible to setup a Boogie style dual EZ81 rectifier? Would it be worth it?

Yep, that's the logical choice. I was just curious about dual setup. I've read that it can do nice things and I like the Boogie dual recitifier even though that beast is a completely different animal than ours.Plexi wrote:About anything is possible..lol but for the price of 2 of those tubes, and all the other stuff, room etc..the GZ34 would be the way to go..just my opinion. And, when useing the octal, there are other tubes you could use,and try if one wanted to.

Besides the GZ34, I'm not real familiar with the performance characterics of other Recitifiers. What others would you experiment with?

I thought seriously about using a pair of EZ81s but since they are not being made any more, I don't really like that idea. I am having a hard enough time finding those for my GDS Amps.
A GZ34 is logical but I fear it will not sag enough at all.
I suspect I will go with a diode rectifier with some sag circuitry.

Yeah, that was my thought also. I love the sag of the EZ81, it's really what add that extra bit of character to our amps. Do you think Ted Weber would be up for making a custom designed copper Rectifier for us?Graydon wrote:I thought seriously about using a pair of EZ81s but since they are not being made any more, I don't really like that idea. Guys,
The Weber WCA4 is their EZ81 copper cap.
James, yes, Weber will make any custom copper cap you want. If you tell him your input voltage, your desired output voltage, the projected current and the desired voltage drop, he can calculate the correct design. You could do a chassis mount version if you want to preserve tube socket space. He might even have an adjustable version.

solid state option I am trying out
I dont think I am the first person to try this but
in my current amp I am using a pair of 1n4007's
with 120 ohm 5 watt resistors in each leg.
Kind of a sag circuit.
I will let you know how it works out so far it works fine

Re: Orion 6CA4?
What's their reliability like? I've heard a lot of current production rectifiers seem to suffer from reliability problems....bnwitt wrote: what about the Orion brand (supposedly from EI) for $11 from New Sensor?

Re: Orion 6CA4?
I sent them an email to ask about this tube but still have not received a response.bnwitt wrote:Graydon,

Do you know if it is a NOS or a newly manufactured tube?

EI current stock
Graydon,
I'm not sure but according to the tube store, it is a current manufacture by EI.
