Transformer Problem! Help needed!

Post by Ishi »

I got an old broken amplifier a few days ago and decided to strip it in order to be able to use the transformer and chassis. In the process something went wrong even though I had the schematic available and now I'm not able to sort out how to wire the PT.

Using a sinewave generator set at 50Hz and 1V i started feeding the 5 different primaries to see which combination to use. Most of the voltages i got was way too high. The lowest winding ratio between secondary and primary was 4.5 to 1. If I had 110V that would have worked but I have 230V which means way too high voltages. The fillament ratios was also only half of what it should be.

On the scematic there's supposed to be 6 primaries but what I have seems to be the ones labeled 110 through 220 and not the one that say 0. The colour coding is completely gone so trying to use that is not an option.

The other wires are all sorted out so it's just a matter of figuring this one out somehow. To me there's certain things that could have happened.

1. I accidentally cut the cable when stripping the chassi (highly unlikely because then there should have been at least some trace of it left)

2. My measurements are all wrong

3. There is a short somewhere (it does look like it has been running hot since some of the lacquer has melted and been dripping) The previous owner stated that the tubes lit up when he started it but no sound.
Using the wires I've found that would mean a plate voltage of about 1kV 8O

4. There's a clever solution to this I don't know about.

The transformers was originally powering two 6L6 tubes and my thought was using 6V6 instead and make an "18 watt" from it. This should work since the OT primary should be a pretty close match.

Some input would be nice especially if i can get the wiring right so that i could finally build my amp!

Cheers
