Potentiometer Question

Might be a really stupid question but....

I've got a Dockery 18W TMB in the making at the moment but just come to mounting the pots to the chassis and they all have like a little tab sticking up from one side preventing me getting them to sit even (pot shaft would just stick out on an angle otherwise).

I take it these should be cut off?

Here's an example of what I mean:

The tab is there to lock the pot in position by fitting into a small hole. Personally I snap them off with a pliers and rely on the locking nut.

Well I don't have a hole for them to fit into on the chassis and don't have the tools to do so (prepunched and cut) so off they come then I guess!
