Speaker Wiring

Post by dayvo »

Hey guys
I have a speaker wiring query
I'm building a 2x12 cab, using a WGS Reaper and a WGS Vintage 30, both are 16 ohms
I'm wiring them in parallel (8 ohms), but I also want them wired so that I can use each speaker individually
So I'm enquiring if my diagram is correct to achieve this, if not, could someone correct me?
Regards
Dave

That looks wrong to me, I'm not quite sure from the drawing what switching your doing with the sockets. But it looks to me like you'll either always have both speakers connected, or a dead short.

I can't quite see the solution at the minute, I'm over tired and pre occupied with other things but if a solution pops in I'll sketch it out and post it.

Cheers

Could be that I misread your drawing, had a bit of a brainwave and I think this will work.

Thanks for your diagram
This is my first cab build
Could you please explain the switched contact?
Is it one of these?

Yes, that's the type of socket you'll need.

If you examine the socket you'll see that one set of contacts connects to the plug when its inserted. If the plug is not inserted then they connect to the other contacts.

I don't think so, again you'll always have both speakers connected.

I'll try and make it a little more clear. Firstly lets assume that both speaker -ve terminals and the three socket ring connections are connected together, so we only have to consider the switching of the +ve.

Both the individual tip switched contacts are connected together and also to the tip connection of the 8 ohm socket.

The individual tip contacts connect to each speaker positive.

How it works:-

For 8 ohms, ie both speakers. The connection to both speakers is through the switch contacts on either individual speaker socket.

If you plug into one of the idividual sockets then the switch contact to the other speaker opens and the speaker is connected via the normal tip connection.

I will add that I'm not sure if the switches on these sockets are entirely up to the job, I'm sure someone will chime in and confirm or otherwise.

Cheers

PS, I've attached a picture showing the layout of a typical socket.

That socket from Jaycar will do the job fine. I've used many of them myself. Wire up as per Martin's drawing and you'll be good to go.

Just remember to check it with a meter, so that you don't run your amp without a load.
