Making a SS Marshall Lead 20 into an 18watt

Post by KenMoon »

A friend has asked me if I could convert his little mid-80s Marshall Lead 20 into a tube amp.

It turns out that this is a cool little SS combo, with just the right knobs for a SuperLite :-) The amp is solidly built, and has a beautiful thick aluminum chassis.

The only real drawback is that it only has a 10 inch speaker. I've got four we're going to try - a Jensen P10R, and 3 different Eminences (Legend, Ramrod and Ragin Cajun).

I'll be using the pcb from guitaramplifierpcbs.com, the Antek toroidal PT, and a ClassicTone OT (I also have a GDS OT, and we'll try them both to see what they sound like).

I'll take some pics and post them as we go along- should be fun!

I built a lite version in a small vox pathfinder i think they call it.
And have a lead 12 i'm using for a build. The SS PT is mounted on the back, and the PT i have to replace it fits the hole cutout exact. Making a different faceplate,it has a huge steel chassis that has room for about anything. A 1x12 speaker cab.. the SS amps can be picked up pretty cheap, even cheaper if not working. And you can use them to build an amp into.
